His road to greatness was the Margo. If he would have won that fight he would be hail as great. **** we'll be as close as he could ever be to Tito. Now even if he wins the rematch he won't ever reach that height.
Spot-on. He's a fan favorite, has an entertaining style, but he's too flawed and his resume is too thin to be considered a true great. Best Cotto fans can hope for is the HOF and I think he'll make it eventually (not as a first ballot though). Solid fighter.
Not only will Cotto go in first ballot, but his resume is not thin. He has the best resume from 140-147 in our era EASY.
I think Cotto is a great fighter... he's a warrior and he'll fight anybody, unlike Gayweather... win or lose, thats what great fighters do... and nobody dominates Cotto, even in his losses, he gave almost as bad a beating as he recieved. He pummeled Margarito's face and broke Pacquiao's ear drum I beleive. Based on the level of competition Cotto has faced and the fact that he's a 3 division champion.... I believe him to be a great fighter and a sure fire HOF'er.
Cotto has been in some battles. Torres, Mosely, Judah, Corley, Pacquiao. He has given us some great fights. Thats why i like him.
I respectfully disagree. I think Cotto has one of the best resume's in the business, next to Pacquiao. The other issues are just though. He fell at the major hurdle.
I think Cotto's resume is not to be sniffed at. The Margarito defeat brought him down a peg in many people's eyes but that was a fight for the ages. Torres, Malinaggi, Corley, N'Dou and a few other fringe contenders at LWW. Quintana, Judah, Mosley, Clottey and 2 wars with Margarito and Pacquiao at WW. Foreman and Mayorga at LM. I'd say his light welter record was decent, his welter record was very good, his light middle record is average . A rematch Margarito win would be good for him, but it wouldn't mean much if it becomes clear that Margarito is past his best. He's a definate HOFer. The only way Cotto goes up in my eyes is if he fights and beats Martinez, Williams, Angulo, Mayweather or Pacquiao in a rematch.
Cotto is awesome, the Margarito defeat was obviously flawed due to tampering with gloves. Would love to see him get revenge for this.
I'm afraid I have to correct you there. Margarito's gloves were not tampered with that night, at least according to the NSAC.
Interesting. I have to wonder still, as I have never seen Cotto damaged as heavily as in that fight. Guess Margarito has some heavy hands...and a good chin for sure.
Look at Pacquiao's post fight interview following his dominant win over Margarito. His face was bruised and he had swollen eyes/cheekbones. And he won dominantly! I accept that there has to be a question mark over Margarito's wins but I had to say something because there is no proof that Margarito has ever a) entered a ring with tampered wraps b) known about the tampered hand wraps and c) the evidence regarding what was in those handrwaps on the night of the Mosley fight is not 100% clear.
how isnt it clear if they confirmed it to be a powder descripted as the plaster of paris used to make cast and cielings... i still dont know and have no proof he used it with cotto BUT, they said they found blood stains onthe pads that contained this which looked like it was from a previous fight, and Margs biggest fight of his life at that time was no other than Cotto dude... cotto was the undefeated power punching puerto rican champ whos matchup with margarito would of been a career determining bout, and if margarito needed (or its common sense to think) if he would have used these hand wraps it would have been with Cotto. theres no proof he used them with cotto, but its not sure he DIDNT use them as well, its something to never be sure of and to put to rest, but again if he needed to do this in a point of his career as a threat to getting his last chance to shine in a big fight an carry on with further succes or to loose and go downstream to domestic fighters on a road to a broke retirement it was versus cotto and pac, and since cotto happened first he was the unfortunate one if he did use them, which makes no sense to try to use them against mosley and not cotto the most important fight of you carrer at the time.
His resume is excellent and it's stacked with good fighters and guys who were or became world champions, with the win over a future hofer SSM being the name that really stands out...no question it IS one of the better resumes of this era...but I'm talking about how it stacks up in boxing history. It's definitely not up there with the true greats. He would've needed to beat Pac and May, along with Margo, to be up there with the greats...but we all know now he was never good enough, despite being a really solid fighter.
I don't think the Margarito fight would have made him "Great", he was expected to win that fight anyway and his opponent was so one-dimensional he had to cheat. The Tito part is way over the line. Beating Pacquiao would have definitely made him great.
