This is just my humble opinion form a Cotto Fan to You!

58,000 British soldiers were lost in the first day at the battle of the Somme. World War II was the deadliest military conflict in history. Over 60 million people were killed. On Nov. 14th we had firepower and the only casualty was Miguel “Angel” Cotto and his boxing pride.

It was labeled as the fight of the year; a mega event which would do amazing numbers on pay per view and a...matchup which promised heated exchanges. As the fight started we soon found out that Miguel “Angel” Cotto essentially brought a knife to a gun fight. Cotto started off the first round in a great way. He fought patiently, he jabbed, he provided proper movement and when he went towards his corner; his trainer Santiago said “Vamos a moverlo para atras” in other words, let’s start backing him up now.

As Miguel started the second round very confident, he tried to back Manny Pacquiao up and deviated from what worked so well in the first round. The Caguas native soon found out, it wasn’t as easy as he predicted. It was visible that Pacquiao’s speed was hindering the Caguas native Cotto, from pressing the action but what disturbed this writer was Cotto’s inability to adjust as he has in the past. I mean, we are talking about Miguel Cotto who stood toe to toe with a fast Shane Mosley and made many adjustments along the way.

In this battle Cotto didn’t bring any other plan other than to mull his opposition down. It worked in the past but what about his future? If Miguel Cotto plans on being great again, he must return to what got him there. The Miguel of the past boxed his way into victory; he would use speed, power, defense and movement to completely dismantle his opposition. It is what obtained him victories over Shane Mosley and the likes of Judah and Quintana.

Since leaving Evangelista we have seen a Miguel Cotto who has been comfortable with simply trying to overpower his opponents. Cotto was in a life and death battle with Joshua Clottley which we can attribute to the cut, but that happened in the 3rd round and if you view the 1st & 2nd round besides the flash knockdown; Miguel didn’t have any sort of game plan. Miguel has become predictable and is on the verge of becoming the next Fernando Vargas.

Bottom line, if Miguel wants to continue fighting at an elite level; he must make changes. As Cotto boxing fans we have excused the Margarito loss with bricks, excused the Clottley split decision with the cut but there is no excuse for pride. As he arrived in Puerto Rico, he was questioned by fans; will you make changes in your corner. The Caguas native was upset and replied “No, why make any changes?”

It is the typical boxing pride which has caused the downfall of many careers; from Tyson to Judah, from Camacho Sr. to Jr. Boxing pride has caused many potential greats to feel invincible and prideful in their training; fire trainers and believe they can make it on their own. Let’s hope that our Puerto Rican champion Miguel recognizes his errors before he makes several more of them.

The Cotto of past was a lot more patient, and broke his opponents down with great power, coupled with excellent boxing.

Miguel became way too over confident after the Mosley victory. Even in the Margarito bout, did you see in the first round where he cocked his hand when he hit him...

Pride has hurt many boxers! Miguel Cotto is one of them, if he doesnt change trainers or his training mentality of relaxing and trainining in slow motion... then please retire !

I saw Cotto as a a very young talent on some bill and I always said he would be champ. Cotto of late takes too much time and had visibly slowed down (I said this prior to the Pac fight). I would have like to have seen him been trained by Roach who probably would have bought the best out of him, or maybe even Steward. I have been and will always be a massive fan of his.

There were a couple of times in this fight even before the knockdowns where Miguel looked like an amateur in there.... no balance, no footwork... and granted, no excuses Pacman is Pacman but Cotto has let his pride get the best of him.

In Puerto Rico every boxing trainer is telling him to make changes now or else... papa trinidad, bonilla all of them but he doesnt listen to them because he wants to be in charge.

When Evangelista was there, Evangelista was in charge and thats why they clashed.. Evangelista was always on top of Cotto, correcting his mistakes and giving correct gameplan. All of that is gone now. :patsch

Cotto isn't at his peak, but he just ran into the wrong guy. The same happened when he fought Margo, and to a certain extent, Clottey. I think Arum lost faith in Cotto along the way and has decided to use him to prop up other Top Rank fighters. Arum was deadset on matching Cotto with Margo.

I remember before the Williams fight, Margo remarked that Cotto was a much easier fight than Williams. That proved to be all too true. Cotto got smashed in that fight and Margo's popularity skyrocketed. Arum then put Cotto in with Clottey. I didn't understand that move. You don't put an established star in there with Clottey. Clottey didn't have the power or workrate to get a decision against Cotto at the Garden, but he had all the tools to beat the hell out of Cotto. You really don't want to be facing a guy like Pacquiao after fighting Clottey. Margo's head swelled up like a beachball after he fought Clottey.

The Pac fight was an ass kicking waiting to happen. Cotto had already been through a few wars. Not only that, but he was Pac's 4th straight left hand dominant opponent, the third in a row that fought out of the orthodox stance. Poor Cotto didn't stand a chance. Pac only had to worry about one punch and was effectively able to counter Cotto's jab at will considering he didn't have to worry about Cotto's right. Besides power, Cotto had nothing in his arsenal that could exploit Pacquiao's weaknesses.

Cotto would've gotten poleaxed no matter how he tried to fight. He simply isn't and never has been good enough to defeat Manny.

I agree....and the reason he kept trying to back Pacquiao up was because his trainer kept telling him to back Manny up....that all he has is the left !!!!

    Bad advice !!!!

Cotto actually has more of an arsenal than Pac. Cotto just chose to brawl with the best boxer/brawler in the game.

Cotto has lost much discipline, but still has the heart and the tools to beat anyone in the top level.

Uh, Cotto does not have more in his aresnal than Pac. He also did not brawl with Pac. He ran for the majority of that fight. Anyway, my point was that Cotto doesn't have anything in his arsenal besides tha powerful left hook to exploit Manny's weaknesses.

Right, he is only good enough to rupture his eardrum and swell up Pac's face. Cotto got beat, but he definetely fought the wrong fight. The Cotto that fought Mosley, gives Pac an amazing fight.

My friend, if you go to Youtube and search COTTO vs. SOSA thats classic Cotto right there... He forgot all of that, and he started relying on his power and stuff.... that Miguel Cotto was a beast...
