I think people are now too much about "Manny would have done that to Cotto WhATEVER Cotto did" - but let's actually look at the fight. Cotto won the first by moving, countering and working in controlled bursts.

He lost the second by a small margin cause Manny started to lead.

He nearly won the third, bar the knockdown, by moving, countering and working in controlled bursts. The KD came because he tried to open up and exchange flurries of blows with Manny. He made the same mistake with Torres.

He was winning the fourth until he started trying to trade with Manny. He lost his discipline and thought he could get his man out of there.

In the fifth, Manny wasn't immediately keen to press his advantage because he had been shaken up by Cotto. It was only when he felt completely recovered that he went on the attack again.

Of course, in the ninth he thrashed Cotto mercilessly, and in the tenth Cotto somehow managed to do enough to win the round. Did Manny take a breather, or was he worried about seriously hurting Cotto?

So, what we can see is that Cotto was clearly skilled enough to out-box Manny, and cause him problems. Manny was getting marked up, his eardrum was burst and I bet his rib-cage ached afterwards from those early bodyshots.

Manny won the fight by taking advantage of Cotto getting reckless, as he's done many times in his career. it was a solid gameplan from Roach, but even he admitted he was surprised that Cotto was giving Manny problems early.

Cotto's an excellent fighter who made a serious error in the ring and, against a GREAT fighter like Pacquiao, he got punished for it.

From watching the fight, if Cotto had boxed Manny and used intelligent, controlled aggression, the late rounds would have been a brutal war between the two, with Manny taking the fight on a close UD.

great post! The fact is fights are lost between two greats usually when the first mistake is made. Cotto mad a big one, and paid the rest of the fight for it! Pac is an amazing fighter, but people should not act like Cotto never had a chance.

Many, including Pac would not agree with you. Both are great fighters.
When you lose to a great, just as Pac has in the past, there is no shame in that.

Cotto's problem is his training he isn't training hard I saw him at gym in tampa he's sparring with novice fighters, getting tired by 7th 8th round in those sparring sessions, his intensity is crap and he's off balance and his punches have become wider. His punches are arm punches now no body behind them his combos are non existant.....

The amazing technique Cotto once had is dead & gone with the firing of his uncle, the beating he took against margo, cotto's own stubborness, and his friend who knows nothing about training Joe Santiago.

That knockdown in 4th round Cotto looked like a dam amateur the way he reached out with his punches leaving his legs behind him reaching with the punches and his chin sticking up in the air and PACMAN deservedly nailed him and he never recovered.
