Miguel Vazquez vs Denis Shafikov. IBF Lightweight title. 22-2-2014.

i read the write ups that this was a clinch fest and bore of a fight?

is it even worth getting a copy to watch it? or should i just leave this one alone? LoL

 

Those are two different questions: Does he have a crowd pleasing style? No. Did he win on the judges scorecards? Yes, widely. Vazquez fights in the style that allows him to use his strengths (height, reach, footwork) and make up for his weaknesses (lack of power). He didn't fight Shafikov's fight. He fought his fight. And I didn't notice any fouls.

 

Whoever wrote those writeups shouldn't be writing about boxing, period, let alone professionally.

It was a decent fight.

 

He do same as Wladimir, Wladimir get called boring, so Vazquezzzzz also boring. Cure my insomnia.

 

That is just it, though - for long stretches he allowed it to be Shafikov's manner of fight, and he still came out top banana. Really a remarkable performance, and yet only negative things are being said about it. High traffic boxing forums don't exactly attract the best and brightest, it seems. :conf Who knew?

 

I wouldn't even call his effort disappointing. Shafikov did the best he could do. He seemed as surprised as all the rest of us at how much physically stronger Vázquez was, and how much sharper with his timing.

Shafikov didn't come off too badly in there, he put in the best effort he could, made adjustments, handled the cuts without panicking (of course having Miguel Diaz helped immensely), and was simply outclassed.

This was a very good fighter defeated fair and square on the night by a superior one.

Yet everybody is reluctant to give Vázquez a shred of credit for it. (not you; obviously you just did give him credit, but the majority of the plebes here...)

 

Miguel Vazquez is a World class talent, one for the purists. Not ever going to be an action fighter but if you want that there's GGG,Maidana,Lucas, Ruslan,Kovalev.Stevenson etc.

I enjoy watching Miguel Vazquez but not strictly for entertainment purposes, i enjoy how he dominates good fighters.

Wasn't Vasquez offered a career high pay day? (Seem to remember reading about it on the Ring Magazine site.)

Would be an interesting fight Broner was strong for a light weight but he is fairly flat footed and Vasquez movement could cause some problems.

If I was Dana White and wants to kill boxing I'd put Vlad Klits Rigo Floyd and Vasquez all in one PPV card. These lineup could literally cure Insomnia and kill boxing instantly...

Three of those guys are never boring to people who appreciate the art of boxing, and the fourth was horrendous in his most recent HW title defense but is honestly not the worst HW champ on the eyes (or most clinch-prone) in even the last decade.

 

This place sure is weird at times, you have guys like Maidana, Ruslan and Rios etc labeled as bums/limited plodders yet they also label Floyd,Rigo,Vazquez and Wlad as boring. Does this place even like Boxing anymore?.

 

This is true. Vazquez became agressive after he started bleeding and was intermittently taking the fight right to Shafikov, and still getting the better of him, as you say. As Aquamarine said, he just wouldn't let Shafikov get set.
And, as Ray Mancini pointed out, Shafikov was not cutting off the ring or coming in behind a jab. Shafikov did better in the last couple rounds as Vazquez tired, but Shafikov never really adjusted.

 

I think he tried making adjustment, Vázquez was having none of it and was the boss in there.
