Actually it's Jesus Soto-Karass, who is a Top Rank fighter and just so happens to be Margarito's chief sparring partner. I wouldn't mind seeing that fight come off later this year, Cotto-Cintron in March, then Cotto vs. Margarito II/Clottey/Williams, next June at MSG.
karass is a good fighter, i personally think he'll give cotto a tough challenge. margarito just laid out the blue print for a win against cotto but it won't be easy.
This is how I'd like to see it pan out, although it does send my dreams of a unification unknowingly into the future a bit...
if cotto beats cintron in a real and impressive way, like williams did against his rematch against quintana, then this would be real good for cotto and head him in the path of climbing to the top once again and talks with a margarito rematch... and if it ever happends please let it be in madison square garden or atlantic city
He may have laid out the blue print, but there is no one :nono in the 147 division that can carry it out besides Margo
I don't deny that Cotto has the tools to put all of these guys away... it has yet to be seen however if he will get up mentally for the task.
ishe smith would be a poor choice because he makes his opponents look bad even when they win... look at the sechew powell fight, the joel julio fight, the last fight against that polish guy who was terrible... ishe is a classic spoiler, why would u want someone like that against cotto in his tune-up? jesus soto-karass would be the perfect choice, cotto would destroy him and look good doing it... soto-karass was getting tagged repeatedly by david estrada in his last fight and got the benefit of a premature stoppage when estrada CLEARLY wanted to continue
I doubt Cotto will fight Cintroen even though he should be able to handle him. Cintroen has the type of power to stop Cotto at anypoint in the fight. Cotto most likely will fight a guy safely dominate. Ishe is a good pick. Williams would be all wrong as well. I doubt he will face Margarito any time soon.
I don't think Cotto is at a stage where he should take a really easy fight to come back. He was without a doubt the best welterweight in the world and had great opposition to back it up. I think he's at a stage where he needs to keep a somewhat high level of opposition and Kermit Cintron is certainly the kind of fight to put him right back into the mix !!
