CARSON, Calif. — Vic Darchinyan did what he said he would. Cristian Mijares forgot what he was supposed to do.
Darchinyan knocked Mijares down with a left uppercut in the first round and finally finished him off in with a jolting straight left in the ninth Saturday night in their super flyweight title unification fight.
IBF champ Darchinyan dominated the match of 115-pounders from start to finish to take away Mijares" WBC and WBA crowns.
"I promised to show my skills and knock him out and I kept my promise," Darchinyan said. "I was always confident I was the best fighter. I had beaten guys that had beaten him."
Mijares, known for boxing skills and not power, said earlier that intelligence would beat strength. But he did not fight a smart fight, instead trying to mix it up with his hard-hitting foe.
"My heart came like a Mexican and I did not fight my fight," Mijares said through a translator.
A native of Armenia who lives in Sydney, Darchinyan had won all but one round on each judges' card before he stopped the Mexican fighter as the ninth round ended.
As he had throughout the fight, the left-handed Darchinyan first caught Mijares with a right, then, as Mijares backed away, Darchinyan lunged and landed the left. Mijares fell backward onto the canvas and stayed there.
Asked about having an easy fight, Darchinyan said, "He's not easy. He's a good fighter. But I can box, too."
Darchinyan's unorthodox style, which consists mostly of sticking his straight right arm toward an opponent's face then following with hard lefts, seemed to completely baffle Mijares.
"I never fought his style," Mijares said.
The 32-year-old Darchinyan is 31-1-1, with 25 knockouts. Mijares, 27, is 36-4-2, with 14 knockouts.
There was heavy rain late in the afternoon that stopped before the fight card began, but attendance at the outdoor arena was just 3,076.
Darchinyan dictated the pace from the opening bell, landing several lefts early, then catching Mijares with the uppercut late in the first round when the two were trading punches in close quarters. Mijares' knees buckled and he sank to the canvas.
Mijares connected with just one flurry the entire fight, that during a brief span of the fifth round, Darchinyan, however, was unhurt and unfazed.
In a prelim, unbeaten Andre Dirrell stopped Victor Oganov in the sixth round of their scheduled 12-round super middleweight bout.
Dirrell, the 2004 Olympic bronze medalist from Flint, Mich. ran his record to 17-0, with 12 knockouts. Oganov, a Russian who lives in Sydney, is 38-2. Both fighters 167 1/2.

    I don't do bandwagons. I'm a Boxing fan.

A loss only makes me want to see Crisitian Mijares suceed even more.

I don't like Vic Darchinynan's awkward style, no matter how effective it was the other night, and he talks to much to be likeable. The guy could go up to Heavyweight and knockout Wladimir Klitschko, and I still wouldn't be a fan. That's not to say I don't appreciate his ability though, he put on an A+ performance against Mijares. A real shocker.

There around about 2-3 active fighters today that I will be following to the very end. Antonio Margarito, Cristian Mijares, and I will be supporting Barrera's comeback attempt.

I understand you like the legendary Barrera, but what success could he have, coming back right now? Very slim at best, imo.

Marco Antonio Barrera is my favourite fighter of all time, and the reason why I'm a fan of the sport and a member at Eastside Boxing.

My heart ruled my head when the rematch was announced for Pacquiao vs Barrera 2. I believed Marco would defy the odds because that was a lot easier than accepting he would get brutalised again. I think he had some form of redemption in that fight, after being stopped in their first meeting, he saw the final bell this time. Marco is not the fighter he was in 2001, but people forget how great of a performance he put on against Juan Manuel Marquez. A style of Pacquiao's is always going to cause Marco problems, and especially now that he's slown down significantly, but I've not seen anything to suggest Marco is shot. There is no shame in losing to Juan Manuel and Manny Pacquiao who are both 1 and 2 on most peoples P4P lists respectively.

I would like to see Barrera comeback, or..at least I'll support him in his decision. Why would I turn my back on him just because he has the desire to do even more in the sport, and go out on a high note? That doesn't make any sense. I feel he still has a bit in the tank, not to contend with Juan or Manny, but there are fights out there he can win. If he looks horrible and narrowly beats a C level fighter, then I will wish him to retire. But win or lose, I'll support him.

    Fair enough. :thumbsup

That was my point, even if he comes back strong, I don't see how he could be a top contender, no way he can put up with the top dogs right now. So we agree on that one.

    I'm British.

I don't get the whole nationality thing associated with Boxing. I will be supporting Joe Calzaghe against Roy Jones, but I don't have a particular taste for any of our fighters.

Mexicans to me are the heart of the sport in today's world. They show heart, will, and determination in every single fight they take part in. What's not to admire about that. Not to say I exclusively support Mexicans, I cheer for Cotto when he isn't fighting one of my favourites, because I respect his ability. I think he'll bounce back, and it was just embarrassing to see people here dissing him because he lost a fight. :huh

I want to believe he could be a top contender, but I don't think he could really. It will be interesting to see who he looks to fight, because he much be making a comeback for a reason. I don't believe he'd make a return just to beat on C level fighters.

We'll have to wait and see, I guess. ;)

Btw, I think we two are the only ones who would like to see a Mijares-Darchinyan rematch... I don't understand people. :huh

Wouldn't you rather see a Donaire v Darchinyan rematch?

:good I don't think Mijares getting knocked out was the same as Peter getting stopped against Vitali Klitschko. Mijares shown in previous fights against great opposition that he is technical fighter, a great counter puncher. In the Vic fight, for whatever reason, he wasn't pulling the trigger. Vic put on a fantastic performance, but he was still winging with shots, and telegraphing his uppercut. My belief is that Crisitian came up against an unorthodox style that he's never had to deal with before. There is every chance he could go back, study the fight, and make adjustements to make a rematch more competitive. He also seemed over-confident going in, and that would have also played a factor. All credit to Vic though, great performance.

I don't know if my nerves could hold up in a rematch though. When Mijares was knocked down, I was in utter shock! I would love to see it though. I just want to see Mijares make a comeback, because he is talented.

Of course! I'd like to see both of those matches.
What I'm saying is, most people would love to see a Donaire vs Darchinyan rematch, but have no interest in a possible Mijares vs Darchinyan rematch.
    That's what I don't get.:think

Actually, I posted the exact same thing in another thread yesterday. :good

That's why I would want to see a Vic/Mijares rematch, it's not like Mijares doesn't have a chance in a possible rematch. On the other hand, my feeling is Vit Klitschko/Peter has the same outcome 10 times out of 10. That's not the case with Mijares/Vic imo.
