Just incase anyone was wondering what officially happened to him, Costello said in his Froch on fighting interview that his contract with DAZN expired in March 2025, i'm guessing as soon as Adam Smith was available DAZN were counting down the minutes to his contract expiring so they could get Adam Smith in.
Smith is back to his strange self with his weird tangents. John Rawling the best of the current lot. Andy Clarke is decent too.
like Andy Clarke, as cringe as some of the stuff Smith may say is, his voice is the best, Rawling and Costello's voices are too boring for me, even if what they're saying is better than Smith, Andy Clarke is good mix of great knowledge and a good voice.
Smith is a Rolls Royce compared to Costello. In football terms it’s like prime Tyldsley v Matterface. Smith may be a company man but he has a great voice for boxing commentary, comes out with some great one liners and has genuine passion for the sport.
100%, anyone who disagrees is just a Marchroom / Hearn hater / troll loser. His voice is the best by a country mile.
Smith was partially responsible for that Eubank Sr clip going viral. His reaction was perfect for that moment.
Costello's voice was made for the radio and the constant picture-painting needed there, it doesn't work on TV at all and his habits died hard - I hope to god the BBC brings him back and rejuvenates the Monday podcast as it's a hard listen with Bunce on his own. Smith on TV is ideal at hitting high spots in a fight and does it very well, he isn't often well supported though, I struggle to disassociate Macklin and "legs are shaky Adam" from Smith's commentary even if it's nothing to do with him. The best commentators dominate and dictate the flow. I like Rawlings as he's somewhere in between - able to describe the fight as it unfolds and bring in his co-commentators better than most, that's just experience though.
It was a huge mistake by Eddie Hearn to hire Costello as a commentator on DAZN. It didn't work at all and over time he became embarrassing to listen to. Adam Smith becoming the new main commentator on DAZN is the best decision they have made in a long time. Smith has the ability to build the atmosphere and make the TV experience much better. I know DAZN has received a lot of positive feedback and that they are very happy to have him on board.
lol at judging a commentator by his voice. Superficial as ****. That's what's cringeworthy. People who aren't airheads evaluate commentators on things that matter like knowledge and the ability to analyse at speed amidst quick action. Get out of here with your Smith arse licking. He's shite.
I'm a big Costello fan, but his time on DAZN was not distinguished. Never really adjusted to television commentary and just didn't seem to have the right handovers with his co-commentators. I hope he ends back up on the BBC doing radio commentary again where he is superb. I like Andy Clarke, he is a knowledgable boxing reporter and very good commentator. With due respect to him, there is no comparison between how Smith captured Eubank senior's arrival on Saturday night and how Clarke did. This content is protected This content is protected Good for you if you aren't a big Smith fan, it's no skin off my nose. But if you can't see that voice and spontaneity matter, you aren't seeing the full picture either. There's a reason Murray Walker was so beloved.
I’ve ridiculed that myself many times. Everyone knows that was totally unnecessary but as I said he’s a company man. Amongst the promotional bias and hyperbole you get from Smith, he is still the best in the UK.
