I found myself watching a re-run of Benn vs Eubank 1990 on Sky last week. It was a pleasure to be back in the company of Reg and Jim. They added to my enjoyment and understanding of the fight rather than seeking to manipulate it. Yes, it's a shame he's not been able to make the transition, but the reason he got the job to begin with was his consistent high levels of performance with boxing on Radio 5. He knows and loves the sport and on the radio I like his commentary. Hopefully he can find a place there again.
Costello couldn't adapt from radio to TV, I remember Hearn raving about him signing with DAZN at the time he moved him over to TV.
This is such a weird take. For a start, it depends upon the consumer. For airhead consumers, it might be.
lol absolutely not, you thinking this is a weird take is a weird take, i would rather have someone with a TV friendly voice than someone with the most boring voice on planet earth even though they may be saying really knowledgable stuff, we're watching live sport / entertainment, it's not a game of chess.
As others have said I would have loved for Watt to come back; he was passionate, articulate, had a great voice for commentary, and very knowledgeable coming from his first hand experience. Alas he is probably too old for it now.
Costello was a really good radio commentator, i remember a couple of fights where I couldn't get to a screen and he was doing it on 5 live. I do agree he's not as good on TV. I think its because on radio you can basically speak every second even if there's f all happening in the round, whereas on TV you're obliged to fill moments of inaction for the viewer, and he's not good at that.
