whats the general opinion of him here..

i liked watching him a lot..mainly....although the coetzee fight showed his limitations...
in some fights, like the first weaver as long as it lasted and john l garder fights he looked devastating..

wonder how he'd get along with the current crop of heavys.

Good fighter, his fight with Holy was awesome. Just another good solid guy of the late 80's who probably would have been champion today.

I don't see him as being any better or worse truthfully, especially if his lifestyle habits were the same. Being an alphabet holder or perhaps a 3rd or 4th ranked contender is about all I'd expect. The Dokes who decisioned tex Cobb, drew with both ocasio and Weaver, along with getting Ko'd by Coetzee isn't beating either of the Klit bros. Perhaps not David Haye either. A prime and motivated Dokes ( a rare combination ), would have beaten on guys like Peter, Maskaev, Chambers, Thompson, Ibragimov, etc. He is probably a 50/50 against Povetkin, Chagaev and Valuev.

Michael had a lot of good solid alround tools at his peak, he had a good boxing brain, great handspeed, fast good legs and a solid chin.. He was a character too, he was a great man to promote and manage.. Carl King had him for a long time with Monarch sports.. His drug problems hampered him , yet his inner strength that helped battle him to overcome them along with a great friend Marty Cohen, who championed his cause through a very successful comeback in the 90's. Mike was the kinda man who would beat many young heavys that creep around today.. Your Guinns, Barrets, Ibragimovs, Briggs, Lyachovich's and Brewsters would have been just fodder for Mike at his best.. That 1989 fight with Evander was a fight i will never forget, i was there in the pavillion that night and it sent shivers up my spine the way he stayed in there against at the time the most lethal yound heavy around giving as good as he got.. If Mike stayed off the garbage and stayed below 230 he would have been champ for a long while.... Its a sad day to see where he is at present.. He is around 300lbs and under medication 24/7 in a correctional facility in Nevada for breaking his young girlfriends face for simply waking him up when she came home late one evening.. Mike wont ever lace on gloves again , and its a shame because i remember when i used to watch a retired Dokes just spar for fun in Toccos gym with James Broad to just stay in shape.. Mike is a complete enigma, but had skills that were very underrated............ God Bless...

He was really something when he used those legs in there. He probably rivalled Holmes in that department and then all of a sudden he puts on a few pounds and by the time of either that Ocassio 1 or was it the Chaplin fight, he became a flat footed guy. And it changed everything and took away a huge advantage he had along with those fast hands. He did have footwork to match the handspeed for awhile and then just discontinued it overnight. And that guy was going to be tough to beat.

He got into drugs so early who knows ... he was a fast and skilled boxer with good stamina and a very good chin ... not too much power and a bit short (I think) in the reach department ... I don't see him dominating anywhere but if he was straight and determined he could beat a lot of guys and be very tough on others ...

Agree with most of this but let me mention two points. Firstly Dokes stamina wasn't the best. It was actually one of his weaker points. Secondly his power ended up quite good. At a certain he seemed to muscle up and grow a bit more robust while also becoming quite a bit more flat footed.

How freakish was Ali's defense at the 2.00 stage, jesus. Dokes even if a fledgling still had very very very fast hands and Ali didn't even raise his gloves. Pure Benitez stuff.

Possibly the best performance of Dokes' career, albeit a losing effort.

Dokes had all the tools to be a great champion. He never had the hardest punch, but he was quick, had good defensive skills and decent footwork. He had one of the better chins as well.

His problem, of course, was drugs, drinking, and partying. After he "won" the title from Weaver (I still and will forever feel Weaver was robbed no matter what) he let himself go and never recovered.
