Mike Jiménez vs. Aaron Pryor Jr. II, 10 rounds @ super middleweight

 

Round 1

Pryor is hurt by a big right hand while circling and lobbing jabs casually from outside. Jiménez is moving in and pressing the fight, and Pryor stands his ground to swing in roundhouse counters.

Round 2

Jiménez is stalking and tagging up top with overhand rights. Pryor Jr. is keeping his distance and putting the jab on Jiménez's forehead. Jiménez is having trouble getting inside. Pryor controlling the pace and keeping it casual, arm resting on his left hip as he pot shots while spiraling clockwise around the ring. A few undercutting body combos and timely clinches by Pryor when Jiménez steps in.

Round 3

Jiménez is stepping forward and blocking jabs on the high guard, held tight against his face as he bulldozes across the Herc Rentals logo on the canvas' equator. Pryor Jr. is doubling jabs and pushing a soft but effective prodding right cross into Jiménez's guard to push him back & off-balance. No opportunities for Jiménez to get punches off during the brief moments they are in close enough quarters. Pryor Jr. is tying up or pivoting & lumping out jabs in multiples every time Jiménez approaches the strike zone.

Small world: Findley and Jiménez fought when the latter was an unbeaten prospect four years ago. Findley originally defeated him via TKO in 7 but it was later overturned when he tested positive for painkillers and remains a No Contest.

Jiménez and Pryor Jr. fought to a draw in May of last year, after both men were knocked out by Jesse Hart in 2015.

 

Round 4

Jiménez is starting to batter Pryor Jr. with hooks at mid-range. Jiménez overreaching a bit and lunging forward on the ball of his lead foot but getting a piece of Pryor with every shot rocking him even when partially blocked. Pryor Jr. scuffing his shoes along the Herc logo but not keeping away quite as expediently as he needs to, and not letting the jabs fly as often as in the first three frames. Jiménez consequently able to step through and hook with impunity.

Round 5

Jiménez is pushing through Pryor's jab, letting it skid off his left shoulderblade and either miss past his ear or brush his upper cheek. Jiménez touching up Pryor's chest and then climbing in altitude when he feels the leather sink home, rapping at Pryor's neck and lower jaw with exploratory hooks. Jiménez puts his chin down and guard up, throwing no-look hooks and chopping rights, headhunting, scoring glancing blows. Pryor lazily circling in the same direction at one constant speed and unfurling weak ineffective jabs.

Crowd launching into a chant of "Hollywood" for Mike Jiménez. They're hungry for a stoppage. Hungrier than he, it seems. He's letting Pryor off the hook on many occasions here, not trapping him on the ropes when he could.

 

Round 6

Jiménez is walking Pryor down and floating a fake-out jab before spearing up top with a gavel right on the portside ear of Pryor Jr. Light jabs from Pryor Jr. in retreat. Hooks on the chest by Jiménez and chopping rights on Pryor's trachea. Pryor suddenly manages to shimmy off the ropes and turn the tables on Jiménez, landing a combination as he slides into his ideal range. Pryor Jr. keeps popping straights as Jiménez covers up.

10-9 Jiménez, better from the son of the legend but not enough to steal this critical stanza beginning the second half of the scheduled maximum.

Jiménez is cricking his neck to roll with Pryor's double jabs and pool-cue rights aimed for his chin. Pryor Jr. is sweeping out with underhanded slices across the lower mandible when Jiménez leans in doing body work. Pryor Jr. also mixing in the uppercut, landing nicely as Jiménez puts his entire face into the spotlight, possibly leaning in hoping to grind into a clinch to rest after exerting so much energy walking Pryor down and barking with every plug on the body.

Round 8

Jiménez is shooting the right hand lead on the gut of Pryor and then snapping upright off bent knees to start tapping at the head with multiple rapid-fire but light hooks. Pryor is biding his time, moving in reverse, waiting to counter, telegraphing his intentions, pushing out with the left arm instead of snapping a jab, holding the aggressor out at the end of it fully extended, then FINALLY SNAPPING THE RIGHT CROSS INTO THE KISSER! Jiménez never saw it. Jiménez staggered badly. Pryor swarms him. Raining head shots on the shorter opponent as Jiménez is backed across the ring. Jiménez down finally. Up and under fire, covering up.

Quite a turnaround! Pryor Jr. seemed gassed and en route to a surefire loss (or best case, another draw) just a few minutes ago. Now he might get the upset stoppage. Even if he doesn't get it, he now stands a decent chance of taking a decision unless Jiménez decisively close out this last pair.
