Let's face it, the fight was a snore-fest for the majority with Jones appearing to be in mortal fear of taking a shot from Bailey with 8oz gloves. That fear was confirmed to be right though as he was blown out of there in the late rounds. So has he been exposed as a C level type guy or did he get caught with a mix of unfortunate elements ... heavy hitter + 8oz gloves + great shot? Can the guy go anywhere from here ala Amit Khan.
I don't like writing off anybody who gets beat as "overrated" or "exposed", like Bute has been because he got beat by a top fighter after winning 30 fights in a row, but Jones was being passed off as the next great Philly fighter and losing by KO to an old guy who can do nothing but bang after getting a gift of a win over a decent Mexican does show he isn't worth any hype. He's a standard fighter, probably end up in a Rocky Juarez type position where he'll lose to everyone near title contention level no matter how carefully they're picked for him because he's not good enough.
Didn't Manny say the level of activity in the fight was 'disgusting, even for a gym fight' The way Jones flew backwards off his feet with the first punch No Cheen
Before he got dropped (hard) for the first time in the 10th, I'd already seen enough of Jones. It was because Bailey had a workrate that would make "Safetypin" Johnson look like a volume puncher, otherwise the fight had been pretty close even before he got sparked. Of course the "glass chin" crap we get here is bull, because I don't think many people could have stayed on their feet with those 2 bombs, but the way he fights will give any good boxer the chance to a) outwork him and b) stop him. Jones won't go anywhere soon if he doesn't change his style.
Jones' legs are weak, no spring whatsoever to absorb damage. He should strengthen his neck and legs if he wants to improve. Not to mention a suspect chin. He can improve just the way Khan did imo.
Jones has been saying for a while that he needs to improve his game a lot and that he is nowhere near his full development as a fighter. I agree with him even though I'm not sure where his best level will bring. Anyway I respect him for taking the fight with Bailey with 8oz gloves. He might never become a great fighter but he is a real fighter. He fought Karass twice to erase any doubt right? And in his post-fight interview he was really classy. I respect him for that!
As talented as you are, and as saying to hit and not get hit. He should really improve his durability. Boxing, you will get hit just like swimming you're gonna get wet.
So from this all we really learned is Mike Jones defence isn't what it should be as you should avoid being clocked by the powerful but limited Bailey. Lots of guys good chins or not are getting their lights turned out by bailey if he connects clean. So a guy who was never knocked down in the amateurs or the pros until he gets knocked out by one of the most heavy handed fighters in the sport today and supposedly he has a glass jaw. Cool. Ok. Thanks for playing.
