Idk but both guys never cared about being flashy just effective. Sometimes the right opponents brings out that "flash" as well. I thought Mccallum vs McCrory, Curry, Toney was impressive. Maybe someone should make a thread between fighters that pass the eye test versus those who don't but pass with flying colors in terms of effectiveness.
I don't think I agree with this. McCallum had maybe one fight in his prime, Toney I, in which he started to fade late, and he was 35 years old for that one. Even at 160 McCallum showed excellent stamina, winning most of the late rounds against Graham and actually coming on stronger for the last few rounds against Watson. He fought fifteen-rounders only at 154, and the two times he made it to the championship rounds he still looked strong. He's less proven over fifteen than Monzon, but that doesn't mean his stamina is definitively worse.
I dunno Monzon isn't the style that Mike struggled with and Mike would have equal reach, pretty sure Carlos had the reach advantage in all of his title fights which he used well. I could see Mike of the Watson fight snatching this.
I never really thought of Mccallum has a guy with stamina issues.... but when James Toney can steal the late rounds from you...
Mike Mccallum was such an intelligent fighter that I believe he could handle anything Monzon could bring to the table
A few posters have alluded to McCallum being more skillful, more versatile, etc, lest we forget, Bouitter, Griffith, Benvenuti, Valdes, were not unskilled fighters, they couldnt subdue Monzon ! There is another thread on here about enigmatic fighters, I feel Monzon could be put into this bracket, in no order, he was slow, somewhat lazy, had no Jab to speak of ( more a range finder ) hardly ever punched to the body, wasn,t skilled in the true sense, BUT heres the rub, he was for 10 years or so,unbeatbable. As I have said before, for me, only Hagler/SRR/Greb should be put in the who would beat King Carlos topic.
Monzon has had me scratching my head for years. He's one of those boxers, who you can watch on multiple occasions and notice something different each time, however, minute a detail.
I think Monzon had a higher Ring IQ. McCallum was obviously very smart but Monzon knew how to win fights like no one else.
Monzon by a close decision and I don't see Carlos pissing on him or coming close to looking totally thegreatest. Mike makes him work for it and Carlos has to surge ahead in the last 3 round s. One of Carlos tougher fights imo
I think that this fight goes 15 rounds with Carlos Monzon winning this one by unanimous decision. Mike McCallum though very talented would be very wary of the potent Monzon eight hand that has kayoed 61 opponents. This would prevent The Body Snatcher from inflicting damage to Carlos thin torso. Very good fight but the height and reach advantage would be the difference in this encounter, Monzon was 5"11 and a half, was also a counter puncher with a stiff left jab. Again a fighter can only fight what fighters are put in front of him.
