Like Hopkins did against De La Hoya, it’s a 156lbs catchweight which we know he can make and perform. This isn’t the actual version who fought De La Hoya, it’d be whenever you think his prime was, but he just makes the same weight he made against De La Hoya. Who wins this matchup?
Super close, competitive, interesting fight that could go either way, but I will give Hopkins the slight edge to eek it on points. I am an admirer of both, and think both are underrated, but I actually think Hopkins is more underrated. He beat a lot broader and deeper field of guys than McCallum, over a lengthier period of time, at both 160 and 175. But McCallum had a lot of excellent victories as well, from 154 up to 175. Again, it would not shock me to see either man winning or a draw. Actually, the fight I wish we would have seen and possibly could have seen was Hopkins vs. Toney. I also think that would have been a really close, competitive, interesting contest.
Close fight, but I see it playing out similarly to McCallum vs. Toney—highly competitive, tactical, and open to debate. Hopkins does just enough to edge it on the cards, but it’s the kind of fight that remains disputed for years, with fans split on who really deserved the win.
Honestly this is a toss up. Could be a series of fights. Only thing I'm certain of is it would go the distance. You have two master boxers who can basically do everything. Two complete fighters.
