atberry is correct like almost always . Almost every other post in this thread is ****. Yes , McCallum stopped a younger Jackson @ his best weight & did it quicker , but did not even floor him when de stoppage came . However , Jackson's head just started 2 swing backwards , so I can c Y d ref did d right sing . I doubt that McCallum could do 2 McClellan what he did 2 Watson , McClellan was more murderous . Benn did better on paper against McClellan that he did vs Watson 4 2 reasons : 1) d ref stalled de fight when McClellan was just about finishing Benn after Benn climed back in2 de ring 2) McClellan was already damaged goods going in2 de fight vs Benn
1. Benn and Jackson aside McClellan's comp is pitiful 2. Ya'll must have forgot, Virgil Hill, Montel Griffin, Mallinga, Tate, Pazienza, Brannon, Percy Harris, Glen Wolfe. Those aren't all sparked cold but they are brutal displays, especially look at the KOs below 175. 3. McCallum wasn't hit by Jones best, he has a great defence and ringsmarts that mean he was never got ko'd yet Mclellan who couldn't put away a much easier to hit Benn is going to do it?
That's the way I also see it. I believe that guys like McCallum, Toney and Jones operated on a higher level than McClellan and Benn, ath their best. McCallum wouldn't get hit cleanly that often and he's got a granit chin. I picture the fight in my head and I see McClellan being confused by McCallum mix of jab/feint/lateral movement. He wouldn't shine against Mike.
I disagree. McClellan was a string bean and not a powerfully built man... he was a big puncher though. McCallum was never stopped and suffered only two flash knockdowns in his career... both times were when he was older than dirt (Roy Jones Jr. and Fabrice Tiozzo). McCallum was a great boxer, had good power, and he was very durable. McCallum ain't getting stopped. McClellan stopped a faded Julian Jackson twice (KO1 x2). Jackson went just 6-3 (4) after the 2nd McClellan fight and was stopped in all 3 losses. He also stopped washed up versions of Gilbert Baptist and John Mugabi, both in the 1st round. He went to war with Nigel Benn and was stopped in the 10th. He suffered serious damage and never fought again. McClellan was exciting but he never really proved his worth vs. an elite fighter. It's a shame, but it's the truth.
McCallum was always hittable, ask Jackson, Curry and Kalambay. Benn at his best ducked, weaved, slipped and bobbed really well. He was more difficult to nail. Watson and Toney couldn't miss with the right hand against McCallum. Eubank (II) and McClellan couldn't land the right hand against Benn (albeit 2-3 times).
Benn at his best, try reading. (duh!) He didn't bob, slip, weave or duck once against Watson (duh!) But he got dramatically better in the next few years.
If you believe Benn even at his best had anything on McCallum in terms of defense you know nothing about boxing.
