Mike McCallum vs. Rubin 'Huricane' Carter

Both at their best? McCallum by decision.

Carter wouldn't be able to hurt McCallum. McCallum was down for the first time as a pro vs. F. Tiozzo at LHW, he was 38 1/2 years old. The only other time he was down was vs. Roy Jones Jr. at LHW, he was about 2 weeks shy of his 40th birthday.

McCallum fought the likes of A. Kalule (KO7), J. Jackson (KO2), M. McCrory (KO10), D. Curry (KO5) S. Kalambay x2 (W12 and L12), H. Graham (W12), S. Collins (W12), M. Watson (KO11), J. Toney x3 (D12, L12, L12), and J. Harding W12. He won World Titles at JMW, MW, and LHW.

He went 49-5-1 (36)



Carter had an upset win over Emile Griffith (KO1). He also beat H. Jacobs 1 out of 2 (W4), Holly Mims (W10), G. Benton (W10), and J. Ellis (at MW, W10) among others.

Carter lost to J. Archer (L10), J. Giardello (L15), and D. Tiger (L10) among others.

He went 27-12-1 (19)

 

Don't be fooled by the movie "The Huricane". I liked it, but it was biased. The movie made it seem like his prime was taken away from him due to going to jail. The movie also made it seem like he was robbed vs. Giardello... he wasn't.

As for his innocence? Who knows, but I doubt he is innocent.

 

Carter was just not in Mike's league. He would have either lost a lopsided decision or been stopped late in the fight. Carter is a bit overrated because of his win over Griffith.

 

It seems like that was an argument posed at me, even though we both agree. :good

 

Carter was no great fighter, just an image built up. He lost title shot fairly, unlike movie portrayal, and was all downhill after that. He got moved into title bout, lost, and dissapeared. He lost half his bouts after title shot. When arrested he was out of middleweight picture. Not much of a carreer, the prison snetance made him as boxer, not what he did in ring.

 

Whew! That McCallum-Jackson fight was some barnburner thanks for posting it! It looked at the begining like The Bodysnatcher was landing a lot of borderline low punches and not being warned enough. Then I noticed after the knockdown in round 2 that Jackson's trunks were VERY HIGH and the punches were indeed legal body blows. In short, an excellent fight which once again affirms why boxing was awesome in the 1980's. Most of these fights were on network television too!

I tend to think the opposite is happening now.

Mike is one of my favorite boxers and was very underrated for many years. But now I think he is getting his dues, his name is almost synonymous with the word "underrated". But so often with fighters they become so overlooked that there is a reaction from fans that begins as a trickle of kudos and quickly snowballs out of control. Sometimes a guy gets underrated, people begin to acknowledge this..But then said fighter becomes almost fashionable to be a fan of and subsequently gets overrated..then actually a lot of the time there is a backlash to that and the fighters gets underrated again. :nut

I feel Carter gets a bum rap mostly because of that inaccurate movie and a lot of people's skepticism about his innocence..and I have been certainly guilty of this in the past.
He actually was a very, very good fighter with an excellent punch, solid skills and a sturdy chin. He just happened to be an undersized middleweight in what was essentially one of the greatest eras the division had ever seen.

Mike beats him for sure though...just to many things he has over Rubin.

 

Nah, wasn't really fighting with you. I just think an upset is highly unlikely. I also think McCallum being seriously hurt by Carter is even more unlikely.
