Here’s my write up and scorecard from a few years ago: Mike McCallum v Sumbu Kalambay 2 Plenty of close rounds but I felt Kalambay lost his way in the middle rounds where McCallum got on top and banked enough rounds to take the decision overall. I think Kalambay lacked some of the sharpness he had in the first fight. Maybe the 3 years that had passed since the first fight had the bigger impact on him than McCallum. Another good fight but these two were so well matched that I can't say one fighter was clearly superior to the other. 1 10-10 2 10-9 3 9-10 4 10-9 (close) 5 9-10 (close) 6 10-9 (good round from McCallum) 7 10-9 (McCallum starting to get on top) 8 9-10 (close) 9 10-9 (Kalambay not as sharp as in the first fight. McCallum the busier) 10 10-9 11 9-10 (Kalambay's best round for a while) 12 9-10 (close) McCallum 115-114 Kalambay
Good fight . Very close. Mccallum was lined up for big money fights were Sumbu was not wanted in the state's
I absolutely love Vito. Could play a mob gangster or a caveman in a movie and you’d be convinced, haha. Not an easy guy to dissuade.
Agreed. Vito should’ve had a third bout with Hagler the second one didn’t really prove anything people will talk about the adjustments Hagler could make but Vito was a thinking person trying to win, both guys adjust and we didn’t get to see it unfold to finish. The accidental? butting and Vito’s thin skin robbed us of seeing Hagler handle his highest adversity.
Watched it last night and scored it 115-113 McCallum. McCallum: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12 Kalambay: 2, 4, 7, 8, 11 Almost every round could have gone either way or been scored even. The only rounds that I thought were clear were 6 and 10 for McCallum, and 7 and 8 for Kalambay. I see that Jel up above scored the seventh for McCallum, so even that one isn't really clear. McCallum's jab was much more effective in this one than in their first fight. I assume that part of it was down to him boxing better, and part of it was down to Kalambay slowing down a bit since then. Was McCallum lined up for big money fights in 1991? He fought Toney next but I don't think there was a huge amount of money in it.
