How do you feel Mike McCallum would have fared vs prime Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Sugar Ray Leonard?
McCallum was a real pro. I think him and Hearns would have been a toss up, maybe late Mike stops him. So that would have been a winnable fight for him. Duran was up and down in the 80s and it would depend which version would show up. So that would have been a toss up as well, but winnable. I don't think MM beats Hagler or Leonard. I don't think Benitez belongs in that group.
Hagler competitive but comfortable decision. Hearns decision. SRL decision at 154. Benitez who beat Duran by decision. Duran splits a trilogy. Close fights every time.
I think McCallum would beat him, probably by stoppage. Benitez did not last long as a fighter. In the 80s he was shot.
The only guy I’d make him an obvious favourite over is Duran at light-middle, where Duran’s record is very spotty. It’s really only the win against Davey Moore that you can point to at that weight. I think McCallum outpoints him.
Mike McCallum vs: Wilfred Benitez: McCallum via MD/SD or Draw Roberto Duran: McCallum via UD/MD Thomas Hearns: Hearns via UD Sugar Ray Leonard: Leonard via UD Marvin Hagler: Hagler via UD/MD
Why doesn't Benitez belong in that group ? He schooled Duran easily when they fought. And did alot better vs Hearns than Duran did. McCallum had some issues against tricky boxers Kalambay schooled McCallum. And Graham easily could of got a decision vs McCallum, had he not clowned around and lost a point, he had McCallum bamboozled in the 1st half of the fight. I wouldn't say Benitez out foxing McCallum to win a decision is out of the question.
I think Benitez had all the qualities to beat Mike at 154. I’m not emphatic about it but I can see a split win for Wilfred in a tricky-to-score fight.
I think so aswell I think Benitez is tricky enough and smart enough to win a close decision at his best. McCallum wasn't the fastest boxer, and I think he would have issues catching up to the slippery Benitez. Bit of a strange comment from the other poster, that Benitez doesn't belong in this group. Since he fought 3 of the fab 4, and performed respectably in each fight even beating Duran fairly easily when they fought.
How do you rank the 5 Kings p4p based on their entire respective careers, DP? For me it's - 1. Duran; 2) SRL; 3) Hagler, 4)Hearns; 5) Benetiz
I agree with your ranking TBH although Leonard has by far the better single wins, despite having a much short career. But another question is if you count the 2nd fight with Hearns as a loss, does that impact on Leonard's overall ranking for you?
Good question because I could see most of those going either way, except I don't really see McCallum beating Hagler. I actually have this weird image of Hagler McCallum being an absolute war like Hagler hearns where Hagler stops McCallum after some high level shootout stuff. Other than favoring hagler vs Mike and I favor McCallum over Duran bc of Duran's inconsistency at that point in his career. But Duran could definitely win. I actually think McCallum vs hearns, benitez and SRL are toss ups where the absolute best version of his opponent would need to show up to win.
Nah, I already consider Tommy was on the better end of that draw and both guys were past prime, above their very best weights.
