I'll second this, Holy had a Cardiac Arrest in the ring & a torn rotator cuff, yet Moorer still didn't deserve the decision on my card either. Botha would've been an ok win if Moorer destroyed him, but it was a savage war.
I don't understand what you mean by "second raters"... So would you call Byrd & Tua "Grade A" fighters? :think I reserve "Grade A/first rate" status for truly great fighters. I'd say they were more "B+" & Stewart was perhaps "B-" on most nights.
Well I was responding to a post which said everyone on ike's resume bar byrd and tua were second raters
luke, I really don't think he's underrated. If anything he's rated accordingly based on his rather dismal set of whiskers and the fact that he coupled that deficit with a lack of ring smarts that resulted in him getting clocked by old George Foreman. Tommy Morrison, to his credit, displayed better moxie than Moorer..and he did it by sticking to a plan throughout..a plan that took him clean out of his comfort zone. Moorer's chin would be his Achilles Heel vs virtually all of the heavyweight champs of the past...and they'd look sensational in most cases in winning. Sorry, but MM never did truly distinguish himself in the heavyweeight ranks..and he managed to avoid fighting certain names that were around at the time..like Bowe, Lewis, Golota, Morrison...and fortunately enough for him, BTW....as I believe that all of them would have been too much for him. Again, I'm talking chin-wise..not that he was a bad fighter, but the lack of a chin as well as being deficient as a ring general..as well as him beeing somewhat overly cautious, wouldn't spell success for him exactly.
I think MM handles the 80's crop of heavies, aside from Holmes and Tyson, than he could have handled his contemporaries when he did fight. I think those 80's guys were good but basically all on their warts and were on par with their contemporaries. but beatable. I don't see them handling a southpaw and I sure don't see those guys dealing with that fantastic accuracy of Moorer's.
