Look whatever the Paxton book sez on Greb vs O'Dowd that doesn't include the following, it is deficient.

Harry, in the days leading up to the O'Dowd fight was in the 170s

O'Dowd, as champion demanded he weigh 158. After a night in a turkish bath Harry weighed 155. If you Know anything about Greb this weight was an aberration for him. He and his mgr has gone on record time and time again stating his best fighting weight in the 162 /163ish range.

Despite the handicap O'Dowds hometown paps were divided as to the winner. This encounter was a ten round no decision.

Is Klompton releasing a book on Greb then? Any more info would be very much appreciated, the Pittsburgh Windmill fascinates me more than any other fighter.

Paxton's writing about the important Greb-O'Dowd did lack the insight that I've read on this thread. It considers the possibility of Greb overtraining and states that different newspapers had different opinions on who won.

I figured that this is what klompton and you meant about Paxton's book being deficient.

Paxtons book is full of more holes than swiss cheese. Period. The gaps that he neglected to research he filled in with quotes from James Fairs book which is more fiction than fact. the book was rushed, to say the least. On top of that he paints a rather broad, general picture of the man, and ties together certain strings to nicely form interpretations of Greb's life for which there simply is no proof.

Its easy as pie to pop into proquest and locate an AP account from some faraway city. Its an absolute B-Buster to locate and check all local relevant newspapers, but its the only gold standard.

Well to be fair I did not know about the three N.Y.C. encounters between Greb and Dempsey July 1920, I was under the impression this was only one day, so i gotta tip my hat to the guy, however, i do believe if memory serves, he found no evidence of Harry on the eve of his spectacular fight in the Polo Grounds vs Mickey Walker parading himself in front of all the mob guys in what seemed to be extremely ...up condition, with hoes on each arm, when it was all a clever ploy to tilt the betting odds in his favor. He was stone cold sober, drinking colored water, and trained to the proverbial minute. Its one of the great Greb story's and he (paxon) kinda blew it.
