Don't know the law in the Ireland but in the UK you must be resident for 5 years. My missus is Norwegian and even though she doesn't need a British passport or citizenship she looked into it and she was told you have to be resident in the country for 5 years. She then found if she took it up the Norwegian authorities would strip her of her a Norsk passport and citizenship.
