    Yes, but

    Jack Quarry was trying to petition the California Boxing Commission to establish a National Division for 170 lbs. and under.

    With 'California' having more clout than any other boxing commission outside of New York.

    Jack also wanted the Light-Heavyweight division weight to bumped up to 185 lbs.

    Of course, this was to benefit 'Mighty Mike' Quarry, who really was a 170 lb. boxer.

    And Jack Quarry had been working on CBS-TV to air a Mike Quarry versus Gomeo Brennan
    for the 'First Super-Middleweight Championship' bout for the fall of 1971.

    Yes, just thought I'd mention it. As it happens wonder how many of the heavies of the day would of been happy at 185.

    There have been many key fighters through history who would have benefited from a 168lb division.

    Does anybody have the 'full details' on the Mike Quarry versus Jimmy 'The Cat' Dupree
    bout at the Convention Center in Anaheim, in 1971.

    The bout was stopped in the 5th Round, and they went to the scorecards (thru the
    4th Round).

    'Mighty-Mike' was awarded a Majority Techincal Decision (RTD 5) by scores of;
    * 2-2-0
    * 2-1-1
    * 3-1-0

    Following this October 29, 1971 bout, 'Mighty Mike' did not fight again for another 4 1/2 months.

    I liked Quarry, he did not hit really hard but he would get in there and mix it up when he could have boxed,the Irish (desire to fight) came out in him. He was a complete gentleman and a very nice person. The Foster punch could have took out anyone, it was well placed and we seen the same punch wreck havoc on Dick Tiger. The Super-Middle division would have been a good home for Mike.

    Pepe, I saw the fight. The scores were about right. Mike started off boxing very neatly. He was faster than Jimmy but Jimmy was the harder puncher. The issue in the 5th came about with Quarry getting cut from an accidental butt and also Mike made a big thing about getting hit low around the same time. It was played and replayed in slo-mo on the 'Boxing from the Forum' telecast which I watched the fight from. Calif. rules were that the victim of an accidental butt (where the bout was stopped) could get no worse than a draw (if he was behind on points). Of course, if he was ahead as in Mike's case, he gets a technical decision. This fight was all the Quarry camp needed to put Mike in the upper stratosphere of 175 lbers to get that title shot. If he was inactive it was likely because of the cut needing time to heal. Not to rule out Jimmy's chances in that fight, it was still early and anything could have happened. I also saw his fight with Ray 'Windmill' White and Jimmy was good.

    Foster said many times he thought Quarry was the best pure "boxer" he ever fought.

    Bob also said he was afraid he had "killed the kid" with that punch.

    Foster respected Mike Quarry the best I can tell.

    Thanks for the follow-up 'Mr. Scartissue'.

    Jimmy 'The Cat' Dupree had some 'big guns', and with a 12-Round bout,
    he may have done in 'Mighty Mike' somewhere in that bout.

    Though an old guy at 35, Jimmy 'The Cat' could still 'whack'.

    Very suprised Jack Quarry would 'toss' his 20 year-old son in the ring with an experienced
    guy so early in his career.

    Senior Pepe: I REALLY like your posts and how you put in the Ratings, thing is I'm a rating guru, Mike was like #2 or #3 vs
    Dupree, and Jimmy was #3 and #2, WBA , Ring, WBC. You also had Jerry Quarry at #8 When he battled Randy Neumann # 15.

    where did you get the ratings?

    SENIOR PEPE, Michael got the worse of wear, for Kendall pinned his arms on a fight ending clinch, and with his right hand free clubbed Quarry, about dozen of his best shots to the head!

    Andy Kendall He's So Lucky Jerry did not take his head off!
