Get me 'killed' before my 23rd Birthday." > Mike Quarry and Gil Clancy having a falling out, and their contract is terminated on November 30, 1972
Mike Quarry a lazy fighter, resting on his laurels only in it for the big money. I am think Clancy was not on Quarrys christmas card list after all that
Longhorn, first let me say, great historical piece on Quarry's '73. I never knew the purses he was taking down back then. I would mention you have the Billy Wagner and Andy Kendall fights juxtaposed - I knew something was amiss when you mentioned Kendall as a Clevelander - but again, great summation. Regarding Mike, let me tell you, my Dad hated Mike Quarry back in the day. He felt he was a jab and run artist, but that was before the Foster fight. I had seen a lot of Quarry before then. I saw his first fight with Kendall, the Jimmy Dupree fight and I believe a fight with Ronnie Wilson. And to tell you the truth, Dad wasn't wrong. But after the Foster KO, Mike's style changed radically. No longer was he on his toes, but now he was engaging. Don't know if it was to make his fights more exciting or if it was down to his new trainer (Clancy). I'm pretty sure he was trained by Johnny Flores like Jerry before there was a falling out and then going with Clancy and then eventually with Pete Ashlock down in Orlando. But regardless, mike never had a punch, but he did have a good jaw. Now if that type of fighter is going to engage, there are a couple of things assured. 1) An exciting 10 rounder. 2) And Mike is not putting a dent in the other guy, so he is assured of coming out of the fight beaten up whether he wins or loses. I also saw his fight with Billy Wagner and I couldn't believe he was waging a toe to toe war with a guy he could have easily outboxed (by the way, I felt Mike was robbed in this one). Mike eventually did settle down to neat boxing again, such as his first fight with Rossman and his bout with Tom Bethea (another one I watched) and was close to a signed bout for the title against Conteh, but it came apart after that third fight with Rossman. All in all, Mike should have stuck to boxing and avoided those dust ups. By the way, Jerry and he used to spar all the time together and Jerry never went easy on Mike, nor his other sparring partners. That couldn't have helped mike either.
I copied the info from another site whose URL probably would not be allowed here. Didn't notice the Kendall "disinformation". Yeah, most everyone knows Andy was from the Great Northwest. You did a great job in putting more Mike Quarry "inside info" out for discussion.
