I really Enjoy watching Rossman, his style was textbook Both hands up high, elbows tucked in, Solid Left Jab than back in place, Powerful right cross and left hook.. then guard back in place, this boxing handbook style was used to perfection against an eroded Galindez, the problems came for Mike if you could slip his Jab and come inside on him as a motivated Galindez did in the Return, of course an On Song Victor was one of the Cagiest Tanks you will see and no yardstick for Lalonde at all It could be termed a battle of the right hands , but of course there's more to it than that, I think Donnie's defence is looser and he left his chin up in the air on occassions, I think i prefer Mike's tighter defence to see him through, and i think Mike's right can find Donnie's chin at some stage and looking at how Leonard took him out i think Mike can do the same Albeit not with the same Panache. The Mike who turned up for Galindez 1st gets my vote
I'll go with Lalonde to hurt Rossman somewhere along the way and batter him into defeat. Lalonde's losses are pretty much all to top-tier, or at least upper-tier guys. Rossman got beat down by the very ordinary Ramon Ranquillo, and that's not at the tail end of his career -- right after he lost the Galindez rematch. Donnie beat some very good fighters. Rossman has a few decent wins, but mostly was out of his league when he stepped up. Rossman had one very good night where he perfectly executed a perfect game plan -- the idea was to target and bust up Galindez's scar tissue over his eyes, and it worked. I like both guys, but I think Lalonde is more explosive and more athletic and would do the damage to make the difference. Rossman, to me, is more what I call a world-class club fighter, and there's no shame in that.
Thanks guys. Good input. Not sure who id pick but it's looking more and more like a competitive match.
Area and Saint have both sides down so well that theres not much to add, I go back and forth between the two. A very even match between two B level champions, I was disappointed that Mike didn't do better after he won the title or was able to adapt and change during the course of a fight but he never showed that. Maybe a different trainer could have helped but we'll never know. A beautiful performance in Galindez 1 but it later proved to be more of Victor's bad showing then Mike's dominance. Donny's more explosive, Mike more methodical, both have good right hands, I guess its who lands solidly first.
At the time that rossman won the world title I couldn't believe it as the light heavies was a strong division at the time and he was one of the worst champions I'd (then) seen. Galindez looked like he'd trained for about 2 days for the fight butr got it back in the return, easily enough.
Good ****ysis. I think I agree with this. I don't think Rossman was as good as he looked against Galindez the first time, but Lalonde had enough holes in his game to make it look like he was. The jab is the difference here.
Playboy magazine had a good article on Rossman back in the 70's. I always felt that Rossman lost the "second Galindez fight" when the WBA (?) allowed Galindez not to come out of the dressing room because Galindez didn't like some of the officials.....so the fight was rescheduled to a later date and Galindez won. Rossman was left standing in middle of the ring, and Galindez wouldn't fight. Rossman then had to fight Galindez later ...or be stripped of the title.
According to a newspaper report from the time (which quoted ABC folks there -- they were to televise the fight), the fight didn't happen because the Nevada commission and the WBA got into a war over who would appoint officials. Not because Galindez objected.
To be perfecly honest I have limited knowledge of both. Very limited. But from what I have seen, Rossman seemed the more powerful and technically correct fighter. On that basis, I'll go with him.
I was watching that TV "fight" that day. Galindez refused to come out of the dressing room...and Rossman was pacing around in the ring waiting. This was for the "Championship". But, the news report you might be right....but those "officials' issues should have been settled days before the fight....not at walkout time. Something always "smelled" about that situation, and I think Galindez decided he just wasn't" ready to go" on that date.
