Difficult imo, Jones it must be said, is one of the finest fighters to pick for h2h instances in and aorund his best weights. Spinks imo was one of the very best 175 pounders ever, dominant in a very good/great era at 175, and i personally have the man at number 3 ATG at 175 (just opinion). Anyway, will Jones be too talented, his wins over B-Hop and Toney are no small feat. But what about the styles match-up, Spinks, a master boxer who could be awkward, which may be needed here, as predictability is a no-no against Roy. Some question the chin of Roy, i dont personally, but i understand the argument about 'as soon as he got hit,,,,,'. And Spinks will be hitting harder than Tarver or Johnson with that right especially, but Jones was past it when them stoppages occurred. Is it possible that Spinks can frustrate him with the tactics he used against Holmes and then land the devastating right when Jones is open to finish it? Or will Jones come out on top in a great one where he has to pull out all his great cards in his deck to get a decision? I'll put myslf on the line, i'll pick Spinks in something similar to the former scenario, but he's behind when it happens. Im not set in stone on this one though and respect others' opinions.
It's just been discussed quite a bit. I'll take Jones to outbox him for the most part, in a very awkward, but competitive boxing match, until Spinks is able to time one of his shots and takes Jones out around the 8th or 9th.
Roy Jones is a pain for anyone, but i think his best stuff is at 168. He could beat anyone there. But Spinks is a top5, arguably top3 LHW of all time and i think based on the fact that he is proven to a further extend, Michael should be favorite here. Pea's scenario sounds plausible; Spinks is a huge puncher at 175 and also an akward one at that. I don't think Jones' durability is that bad, but i think Spinks would either stop him late or force him too much on the defensive and win a decision.
Tarver was tough to fight -he was awkward and lanky and tough to time. Spinks was all that and much, much more.
I think Spinks was the greatest LH ever. I believe he could beat Jones by boxing him or knocking him out. It's just a bad matchup style for Jones. Spinks was awkward, but very skilled.
I have to go with Jones....Spinks is very underrated but I couldnt see how he beats Jones other than TKO. It would be the first time he faces someone as awkward, and also faster of hand and feet. Spinks had a pretty good jab, would have the edge in punching power, but he had an awkward herky jerky style but he was often times straight up like a bean pole and Jones would be countering. I see a close nip and tuck fight but Jones' speed and ring generalship saving the day, I see him hitting Spinks more than vise versa
If we're going to take that far from peak version of Jones tho, i'd also give Eddie Davis and Marvin Johnson VERY good chances of ko'ing him. Taking however a decent version of Jones i still think Spinks will end up getting to him in the slightly latter stages. If he has to he will wail away at Jones body, and Spinks power is simply enormous. He can take out decent chinned fighters in the blink of any eye and can change a fight against a durable oponent with a single blow at times. Spinks KO 7-10.
Agreed, While Jones was certainly impressive at light heavyweight, his prime was arguably in the middle divisions, and Spinks was a natural at LH. For anyone to beat the Jinx at 175, they would have to be at their absolute best, and I don't see Jones being such at this weight class.
I was a big fan of Spinks. Assuming we could put both fighters in their prime and at 175, I think it would end in either a close decision for Jones, or a thunderous spinks right hand closes the show late in the fight.
