You may have a point here. It seems to me like judges have changed a bit over the years. Twenty and thirty years ago you couldn't really win by running and pot shotting. Is that just me being nostalgic for "the good ole days" or is it true?
Great matchup. Jones is one of the most talented fighters ever and Spinks is a consensus top 3-4 all time Light Heavyweight. Spinks is so ackward though to fight that it negates a lot of your offense. Spinks is the more proven fighter however and was unbeaten against better opposition as well. I would have to pick "The Jinx" in a close fight that he probably wins by late stoppage or close but clear decision.
I like Spinks by UD. I don't think RJJ would mix it up enough for Spinks to win by KO. After RJJ felt Spinks power I think he would be on his bicycle for most of the fight.
Spinks by late stoppage, too much of everything, except speed. Unless Jones talent and speed is so much greater than Spinks that it takes him to a comfortable & cautiouse decision, but he could be far ahead and still get stopped.
As usual, it's filled with people who haven't seen Jones, and who continue to claim he'd be on a bicycle, even though he never ran in any of his fights.
How could someone see a Spinks fight and not see a Jones fight? That makes no sense. The fact is Jones was a great little man, but Spinks was a great big man who had everything over Roy except speed. Spinks was a better banger and boxer than Roy. Roy would have trouble with Michael length and reach. Spinks had a better jab also. I think on Roy's best day, he would lose a close decision.
I'm not discussing how this matchup would go. I'm only pointing out a fact - Jones never ran in any of his pro fights. Glen Johnson fight - Roy is moving very little (almost no footwork at all), walking slowly along the ropes and not even trying to escape whenever Glen closed the distance. Tarver 3 - again little movement, with Roy standing and posing a lot of time, at best doing a couple of side-steps or a step or two backwards, but little moving around the ring and the opponent.
2 very unorthodox fighters... Spinks has the physical advantages in this one and stylistic too. Spinks' slight reach advantage would possibly be increased by Jones' tendency to use the hook. Jones' speedy feet would see him land it though but would also see him in the zone where Spinks can hurt him. Jones was probably never in a fight with such a dirty fighter, would be interesting to see how he responded. I just think it's a lot to ask of Roy to win this fight. Jones is the king at 168 but I'm not sure at 175 that he could beat the cream of the division.
You could say the same about Toney. RJJ doesnt just have speed though, he has better athleticism, timing, reactions, left hook, footwork, faster legs and easily faster hands. I can imagine RJJ making Spinks look pedestrian espescially in the early stages. Spinks range and jab may cause problems BUT what if they dont land? What if Spinks keeps getting beat to the punch without getting counters in? These are valid questions because this was the problem all RJJ opponents had. And what if Spinks finally does land and a prime RJJs chin isnt as bad as an old weight drained RJJs chin? Byrd's recent outing showed chins do deteriate when your old and weight drained RJJ UD or Spinks by KO
I don't like, but love, Spinks here. Via brutal ko. Much the better corner and Futch sure knew how to deal w/ that Jones style with a real short lh in there in Griffin. Futch worked with him to take away a lot of those Jones advantages and even had the 5'5" guy landing jabs in there. Now insert a prize pupil and a guy with about 300% more ability and tools in there. Plus, I don't like Jones and that dangling left hand at his kneecap against elite and great fighters at 175. It'll work against the B level guys just fine but if you hold your hand that low against a Mike Spinks, you'll get tagged by a nasty right hand sooner or later.
Spinks by decision or late KO, too much of everything for Roy to deal with save for speed. He was taller, had the longer reach and KO punch in both hands, and was a good mover himself and a very awkward fighter too. Add to all that the clever use of his elbows when in close and Roy is in for a rough night any way one looks at this fight. Also, you aren`t gonna be fighting Mike Spinks with your left hand dangling at your kneecap & not getting clipped within 30 minutes of being in the ring with him. Spinks is the wrong guy for Jones`s defensive posture and hand placement to be in the ring with, sooner or later he would get clipped and it would be lights out. Spinks by late KO, say circa 9th.
Michael Spinks would beat Roy Jones, by late stoppage, anywhere from rounds 11-15 I think Spinks' herky, jerky awkward style would make Jones miss alot and through his timing off, which would fatigue him in the later rounds. It is there that the Spinks jinx would land with more frequency and hurt Jones. Roy would have his moments in the bout though and I can see him winning some rounds, but IMO I just see Spinks ultimately coming out on top at the end.
Just about everything that I was going to say has been said. In short Roy, whilst amazing, would have been beaten 8 times out of 10 by Spinks. I wouldnt immediately pick a stoppage win for Spinks but it is within reason.
