I can’t put a guy who got schooled, bullied and battered by Buster Douglas at age 23 or whatever — in his absolute prime — in the top 10. It shows he was lacking an ingredient necessary for that kind of ranking.

In line with this argument I think that your top 10 will lack Dempsey who lost to Hennan, Louis who lost to Schmelling, Liston who was defeated by Marshal, Lewis who was knocked out by McCall, Klitschko beaten by Sanders and Purrittie, Foreman defeated by Young or Norton beaten by Garcia.

It's scary to think what would have happened if Doug Joneson had been awarded the victory over Clay or if Angelo Dundee hadn't cut the glove of the injured Ali in the fight with Cooper.

I follow your posts, I think you have a lot of knowledge about boxing but for some reason you are very prejudiced against Tyson. You use double standards and arguments that a person of your knowledge shouldn't use.

you know who Monzon, Charles, Moore, Hagler, Barrera, Duran lost to at various stages of their careers, but that doesn't disqualify them as outstanding boxers.

Even the best high jumper will occasionally lose the bar, which he usually overcomes easily.

    In very loose order;

    Ali
    Louis
    Holmes
    Lewis
    Marciano
    Dempsey
    Wlad
    Frazier
    Tyson

    So bottom of top 10

It’s not like he lost to Jimmy Young or Willie Meehan at his physical peak.

"There are also personal sympathies, the issue of appropriate presentation of trends, views, personality and presence in the media".

That is a fair point. Sometimes a boxer's historical standing can be affected by his public image and concious or unconcious we can be biased towards/against.

Maybe Foreman could be a good example of positive public image improving his status; and a case could be made that his standing in the ATG rankings improved dramatically not just because his feats in the ring during his comeback, but also because Big George was oozing charisma and everybody was rooting for him.

Tyson on the other side is a mixed bag in the public eye, carrying too many controvertial issues; thus he hasn't be able to get totally away from the "just another thug with gloves" image, and maybe there is a sort of negative bias when it comes to review his legacy.

He didn’t do himself any favors losing a fight to Jake Paul. I don’t care how old he was, that was embarrassing.

I find around 7-12 extremely open personally. Guys like Tyson, Frazier, Johnson, Holyfield, Liston, maybe Dempsey, Wlad for some, Holmes for some, it's heavy traffic. There's a lot of guys you can pump into that little segment.
