Welcome back from vacation. Those Tyson fans could probably teach their idol a thing or two about battling adversity.
They were still over whelming favorites at the time and these were huge upsets. It happens when fighters get soft
I’m sure Atlas was upset that he missed out on the championship Tyson years. He missed out on a lot of money and it took him a while to get to the top of the sport as Moorer’s trainer. Also, Moorer’s reign was not as lucrative as Tyson’s was. As you said in an earlier post, some things are not black and white. However, there’s a saying about following the money. Atlas lost out on a lot of money with Tyson. At the same time, I’m sure Cus knew that Teddy’s personality would not work with Tyson. Character has always been very important to Teddy and a young Tyson proved to have the type of character that irked Atlas. According to Atlas, in his book titled “From The Streets to The Ring”, Cus’s willingness to enable Tyson’s less than desirable behavior was borne out of his desperation to have another heavyweight champion at all costs. This is the real reason why Teddy missed out on his share of Tyson money. Why has Tyson never disputed Atlas’s characterization of him as a phony? http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com...t-tyson-boxing-holyfield-2014mar03-story.html
They were favorites and upsets happen. However, Tyson’s loss to Douglas at 42 to 1 odds is one of those “where we’re you at when this result happened” moments in my lifetime.
You got THAT right! They are more ferocious, tenacious and indefatigable than Tyson ever was. They NEVER give up. I would want THEM in my foxhole any day instead of Tyson.
Don’t forget that Tyson’s skills had eroded due to his prison sentence by the time he faced Holyfield. While you’re at it, Tyson’s supporters would like you to overlook the fact that many people were genuinely concerned for Holyfield’s well being, going against Tyson with a bad heart and all. Last but not least, they need you to minimize Lewis’s victory over Holyfield due to the fact that Holyfield was 36 when they fought. At the same time, you must not forget to give Tyson maximum credit for beating a well preserved, 38 year old, Larry Holmes who entered the ring following a 21 month layoff. Be prepared though because Macklemore’s biggest fan (UFC2015) will present video evidence of Holmes rationalizing the layoff as a good thing. That’s about as believable as Broner’s customary prefight interview where he has a habit of saying that he has matured as a fighter and has fully dedicated himself to he sport.
This discussion inspired me to create a mythical matchup thread between Tyson and Toney. I look forward to everyone’s thoughts. FYI, I pick Toney by UD or DQ. I’d like to see if he can diffuse a murderous puncher like Tyson. I think he could. It’d be fun to witness, like watching a stripper wrestle a lion with pork chop drawers on.
Teddy Atlas mocks, criticizes Tyson 24/7/365. Tyson has a lot more going on than to be worried about addressing Atlas's criticism of him. Silence is the best response to irrelevant people.
It is good to see J Jones come out of the closet where he tried to portray himself as an intellectual boxing fan but has now disintegrated the thread to make fun of Tyson fans and is now lobbying for support from the well known Tyson haters. Just something which Lenni tries to do at every opportunity, still seeking legitimacy and acceptance which he has to keep working at his entire life while Tyson just sits back quitely content with everything that has happened as everyone else does all the talking from him.
It’s good to see you defend your idol through thick and thin, despite the fact that he got his @55 kicked from pillar to post, while in his fistic prime no less, by a say it with me...42 to 1 underdog. Next you’ll probably tell us all that the old ladies Tyson used to mug as a kid were really 6 foot 5 inch 280 pound drag queens. I’m not making fun of Tyson fans. I singled you out by name. As I said, I like Tyson and respect his accomplishments which should stand the test of time. This still does not change the fact that your idol was all bully and all dog, as evidence by the times he bit his two masters, Holyfield and your favorite pugilist specialist.
Despite his Hall of Fame status and the fact that he beats any version of Tyson everyday of the week and twice on a Sunday, can you dispute the FACT that Tyson got ravaged by a man whom the public worried about for his safety due to his heart condition?
