Punching a restrained gorilla does sound one of those things that could a hobby for wealthy Victorian schoolchildren, now that you mention it. It'd have been a phenomenal fundraiser for zoos of the day.

Showing him how it's done by taking the whole ear off at the base?

    BTW
But seriously, the gorilla would likely go for his neck!
In contrast a chimp would go for nose, eyes, ears, lips, fingers and testicles.

It sounded as if it was a male silverback as Tyson said he was bullying the other gorillas in the cage.

A chimp is far more deserving of getting punched in the face since chimps are the real troublemakers of the ape world. Especially the males when they reach full maturity. They murder one another-practice warfare, throw temper tantrums. Throw a human among wild chimps and he's dead. In contrast gorillas won't bother a human if the human behaves unthreateningly.

But I guess Tyson was thinking along the lines of proving how hard he could hit. After all, if he knocked out a full grown gorilla the publicity would increase his intimidation.

    BTW
It's similar to Duran's story about his knocking out a mule with one punch.

Even a chimpanzee can tear a person to pieces. A Gorilla in full fight mode would be unstoppable aside from a gun.

Saw Tyson at Wembley once, he was doing a bit of commentary with Harry Carpenter, wearing a grey sweater the way his head seemed to go straight into his shoulders reminded me of KK.

Gorillas have one of the strongest bite forces of any mammal on earth. Stronger than a lion, a tiger or even a grizzly bear. One bite from those enormous canines and Tyson would dead.

Chimps are actually more closely related to humans than gorillas.
