McNeely was a terrible choiceobciously. Mike never got anytime to rid the rust. who would of been ideal. He needed someone who could give him rounds but not make him look bad

Buster mathis:Give Tyson a few tough rounds before mike exploded in the 3rd

James Oyebola: Tough British and commonwealth champ. would of give mike some rounds

Scott Welch: Another tough decent capable brit who won the title off Oyebola in 1995. good chin

Jeremy Williams: Not a full fledge heavyweight but he had ability and was awkward. Would Like to see him try some of his karate and wrestling moves on mike tyson like he did to lennox lewis when sparring

Larry Donald: Good boxer who was capable of taking bowe the full distance in 1994. would of definitely give mike the rounds he needed

Frans Botha: Tough and skilled enought to give tyson plenty of rounds

Oliver Mcall. Limited but tough. Also Tysons sparring partner so Tyson would know all about Mcall and wuldnt have as much pressure on his shoulders for his first fight back.

Maybe Ray Mercer? Would give Tyson some rounds, but doesnt have the smarts to beat Tyson.

straight in with foreman. foreman needed a big name to stop his slip into obscurity, would have been the ideal platform for tyson to re-launch himself also.

holmes rematch would have been a good call also.

these guys whouldnt be ideal for a first fight in 4 years. no one knew how far back tyson had went and how his stamina would be

They would of been great for a third or fourth comeback fight

In that case, i cant think of anyone

Instead of lining up bums for him to knock over, they should have bought in guys to get him the rounds.

McCall had beaten lewis a few months earlier (though got lucky) and Mercer give a clolse to Prime Lewis hell in 1996

McCall may have been ok but no way would I let mercer near him

I dont think Mercer had anything to offer Tyson other than a good chin.

Mercer might have given Holy and Lewis tough fights, but Tyson is a totally different animal and a guy like Mercer is order made for Tyson. This would be just like the Ruddock fights, but Mercer doesnt have the power of a Ruddock

Your forgetting how bad tyson looked in the few sconds against mcnelly and the few rounds against Mathis

Tyson was pretty unsure of himself. McNeeley rattled him and forced him to fight a very sloppy fight which didnt do much for him. Perhaps a guy like Orlin Norris would have been better suited for him.

Anyone tough, who is unlikely to be blasted-out early.

I really wanted to see Tyson slowly get back into the title picture with signing to fight a nobody like McNeeley and then stepping it up against Mathis, which looked like a great idea to get some work in and progressively get better. Then he signed to fight Bruno! Right then and there I knew King was pushing him to get the titles back way too quickly.

I feel this would have been a good route to take:

    McNeeley in August 95
Mathis in November 95 (postponed to December)
    Obed Sullivan in March 96
    Joe Hipp in May 96
    McCall in August 96
    Bruno in November 96
    Seldon in February 97
    Holyfield in June 97
    Moorer in September 97

they were proved right in making those bouts against bruno and seldon. they (and most people) also figured holy would be an easy fight. They really were bringing him

If they were rushing him they would of got him a fight with bowe or lewis in 1996
