Just as the topic title states. I am curious to hear people's opinion. Reminder: Tyson took this fight after a year and a half of inactivity. Prior to this he was soundly beaten by Holyfield twice. He was 36 at the time.
Mike was shot by then, one punch at a time mostly with little to no defense. Still, that version is competitive with most heavyweights today. Lewis still had gas in the tank for acouple more fights. At the end Tyson had little to no punch resistance left.
The only thing that makes it interesting is the version of Tyson chosen. For mine he probably still beats both. But an earlier, better version of Tyson blasts them both away. Perhaps even on the same night.
I always enjoy the excuse by Tyson freaks for his exposure, and destruction. They are actually funnier than some cartoons. At the time of entering the ring against Lewis, Tyson had fought a total of 197 rounds in his career, with a KO ratio of 75%, compared to Lewis who had fought a total of 211 rounds, with a KO ratio of 72%. Tyson's record standing at 49 - 3 - 0, Lewis at 39 - 2 - 1. So even with the 10 extra fights Tyson had in fact fought 14 less rounds. Plus Lewis is in fact 10 months older than Tyson. So even if we are to believe Tyson was shot ( personally I prefer sh*t ) lets not pretend Lewis was ANYWHERE near prime.
Tyson was shot by the time he fought Lewis. He was still dangerous as the Etienne fight afterwards showed. If you stood and traded with him you could still find yourself looking up a the lights. But he was only fighting for money at this point, he wasn't in shape and he cared more about being paid than actually winning. I suspect this version of Tyson loses to both.
i like how you've twisted the facts there a little bit to meet your agenda. Lets just ignore the fact that Tyson was in prison for 4 years, then banned for 2 years for the bite and then inactive for about a year before facing Lewis. Tysons pre prison record was 42-1, his post prison record was 10-6-2, so from that we can see Tyson did the majority of his best work before prison. Prior to facing Lewis, Tysons record from prison was 9-3-2. So what if Lewis was 10 months older, if it was 10 years then that's different, i dont understand why your trying to exaggerate that Lewis was older. Tysons previous fight against Nielson Tyson looked awful, gassed and came in at the heaviest of his career so stop trying to dismiss the fact that Tyson was finished as a top fighter. Most people will agree that Tysons peak was against Spinks.....in 1988, he fought Lewis in 2002, that's 14 years past his peak. Lewis on the other hand was coming off an impressive rub of victories including Holyfield, Golota, Tua and Rahman. Lewis was nowhere near as shot as Tyson. Have you forgotten Lewis fine wine speech? And finally, if Tyson was so shi t.....why was Lewis hell bent on "cementing my legacy by beating Mike Tyson". Evander Holyfield: Me and Tyson were the best two fighters of the era, i knew i had to beat him to be recognised as number one. Tyson was the man to beat, both Holyfield and Lewis knew it. Even Vitali was ****ed with Danny Williams for robbing him of his chance to have a victory over a fighter as great as Tyson. When other great fighters want to cement their legacies by beating you, that means your name means something
At the end, yes. The last couple of years/losses, in 2004/5. Not by Lewis, though. He wouldn't have gone eight with Lewis (even with all the holding) if his punch resistance were as far gone as it was against Williams & McBride. That version, at the end, probably loses to Wilder & Jennings. That couple of years makes a big difference. He was shot when he fought Lewis, but still had enough left to be very dangerous h2h for most of today's heavyweight pretenders. Fast-forward a birthday or two, and he's too shot to do even that. The final descent was ugly. He went from "declining" to "rock bottom" at breakneck pace in the early part of last decade. The version that blitzed Etienne - now that is kinda puzzling. It was after he "broke his back" blood) and sandwiched right in between the semi-shot Tyson of Lewis and the clearly finished Tyson of Williams/McBride. :think Hard to gauge which form he was closer to as of then, since it only lasted under a minute.
I think even that version of Iron Mike beats them both; without much trouble at that. He was past his best, but still had decently fast hands for a heavyweight and a big punch. Lewis had the ring savy power and skill to shut him down. Jennings and Wilder have not shown such skill levels yet.
:good Jennings has some of the skill (more than Wilder anyway) but not the size...and Wilder has some of Lewis' size but not the skill.
