A few contradictions in that 1min clip from Tyson, one minute he says fighters get better because of vitamins, nutrition etc than goes on to say it's all about the spirit inside them and steroids only make u look good.... what is it?
Lol if that were true then 27 year old Joshua wouldn't have struggled with 41 year old Wlad whose career started TWO eras ago.
Marciano, Dempsey, and Frazier would be Cruiserweights today. Johnson likely could also. You aren't comparing apples to apples. If you want to use older fighters you have to use from that era Baer, Willard, Carnera, etc.
Yeah the heavyweights mate with each other for characteristics that increase their chance of survival and reproduction.
ATGs born in this era would still be ATGs. They would have access to the science and training of the athletes of this era, and I would say do better than most of them. In every era, 1 or 2 fighters prove to be ATG, in the 90s it was Lennox, Tyson and Holyfield. If they were born 1985 and upward, they definitely would have torn up this class of fighters now bar a few . I definitely know Wilder, or Fury would not hang with them.
I grew up in the Tyson era...the scariest thing more than Tyson was actually trying to beat Tyson in his own video game. Biggs/Holmes /Bruno/Ruddock/Green/M. Frazier /Robalta/ Berbick/Thomas/ Smith/ Tucker/ Douglas/ off hand ...all thought he was overatted and some even belittled him before the fight.they mostly didnt think his stature would prove to be a good Hw and they would be able to give him a boxing clinic that coupled with his young age. Off hand the only two guys seemed nervous that mattered were Spinks and Tubbs. the only guy that actually defeated him out of the names i have is Douglas and thats bc of obviuos reasons.Even going into the 90's ...guys like peter McNeeley were not afraid of tyson ...really its just myth..a few were and only a fool wouldnt have fear of Tyson bc in general without fear you get knocked out but thats not being afraid or scared theres a differance.
The talent pool has improved, boxing is more of a worldwide sport than it has ever been. Of course certain heavyweights from the past look like they have better movement, they are far smaller fighters. Guys like Foreman, Liston etc. are smallish by todays standards yet they were seen as monsters in their time. Anthony Joshua is a far bigger and superior athlete/boxer to those guys.
Some fighters are better today, Tyson knows his boxing history, he and Cus used to watch old fights for hours.............Fighters are just too big for the small ones years ago............
i repeat, your idea of evolution is wrong. You just dont see the big picture, you are focusing on the environment as its been set. evolution is NOT "getting better" than the previous occupants of the previous environment. Its getting a better fit for the current environment.
you cant take a lot from this interview, to use it as some kind of evidence is a bit daft, he changes his mind like the wind.
Modern athletes also benefit from better medical treatment for their injuries. Every athlete piles up small injuries his entire career, how these injuries are treated is very crucial for further development. Back in the old days a lot of injuries that wouldn't be particularly problematic today were almost career ending. James J Braddock almost gave up his career because of a simple hand injury. If you add modern supplements and science in the mix the simple fact is that a modern athlete can train almost half as much as the old school boxer and if you train something twice as much you're going to have better technique as well.
