Nice take from the Champ. However he is slightly off with GGG and kovalev have no defense, Loma is smooth with matrix like footwork and defense, GGG and kovalev are destroyers, their defense is good enough to get them in punching range to unload without taking that much in return.
I think that, given the context, Mike just said that GGG and Kovalev don't have the quality of defense that Lomachenko does. He wasn't hitting Kovalev and GGG, he was pointing that Loma has better defense. Which is true.
Despite his prefight trash talk and antic in his heyday, Tyson is all class in his assessment of the fight game. His knowledge is top notch in both history and current scene. Truly a student of the game.
He's got a good brain has Mike Tyson. People always wanted to portray him as some kinda dense neanderthal caricature but, as you say, his knowledge of boxing history is excellent. Uneducated doesn't mean unintelligent...
I've always liked reading Tyson's opinions on various aspects of the sport. He always has something interesting and astute to say.
Correct. Many casuals assume Tyson is an idiot because of his 80s out-of-the ring conduct or lack of rhetorical skills. But when you listen to what he says about boxing its clear Iron Mike is one of the most well-educated boxing historians out there.
Mike is an idiot, doesn't mean he doesn't have some intelligence because he clearly does, but he's still been a fool to himself. Indiscipline, Jail, Don King, Islam, face tattoo, coke addiction... the list is endless.
Well yea. Ted Bundy killed 30+ women. But had a certified IQ of 130. Hardly an idiot. Though a psychopath and criminal. Iron Mike has done all sorts of crazy, criminal and violent stuff. But in the boxing history department, the way he analyses current fighters and defines their standing with the sport's historic greats is unique and up there with the best boxing writers. You can't be an idiot and analyze boxing history the way Mike does.
He is, or was, an idiot for the reasons stated. But he's also capable of being quite articulate and knowledgeable on boxing and some other subjects.
