Mike Tyson had a better title reign than Roberto Duran

    Yeah, he did.

I didn’t want to land here, but once you line the defences up side by side, the conclusion becomes unavoidable.

1st title defence: James Bonecrusher Smith vs Jimmy Robertson

Smith had just stopped Tim Witherspoon and Mike Weaver in the same year to win a heavyweight title.
Robertson scraped by the unranked Masataka Takayama and fringe contender Ruben Navarro. 1-0 Tyson

2nd title defence: Pinklon Thomas vs Hector Thompson

Another Tyson victim with victories over Witherspoon and Weaver. Thompson's best wins are over Carlos Gimenez, Jimmy Heir and Joe Tetteh. Yeah, I don't think much else needs to be said. 2-0 Tyson.

3rd title defence: Tony Tucker vs Guts Ishimatsu

Ishimatsu is definitely better. Buchanan and Gonzalez, even on the tail end of their careers, are better wins than Douglas and McCall. 2-1 Tyson.

4th title defence: Tony Tubbs vs Esteban De Jesus.

Yeah, no need for explanation here. Tucker's pretty good, but De Jesus clears. 2-2 even

5th title defence: Larry Holmes vs Masataka Takayama

Sure, Holmes was old and inactive, but he was still Holmes. Takayama was never even a contender. 3-2 Tyson.

6th title defence: Tony Tubbs vs Ray Lampkin

Tubbs beat Greg Pace, Jimmy Young and James Bonecrusher Smith. Lampkin beat...........Arturo Pineda and Edwin Malave. Tyson stopped Tubbs in 2, whereas Duran looked bad and needed to go 14 to do what he was supposed to have done half a dozen rounds ago. 4-2 Tyson.

7th title defence: Michael Spinks vs Leoncio Ortiz

One of the all time P4P fighters, who moved up successfully to beat Holmes twice in a row. And a guy whose sole notable win is Monroe Brooks, and lost to everybody else. You can say Spinks had shot knees and was the naturally smaller man, but you can't say anything about Ortiz. One ended in a 1st round KO, the other was 20 seconds away from going the distance. 5-2 Tyson

8th title defence: Frank Bruno vs Lou Bizzarro

Bruno was a future title holder who beat McCall for the WBC strap, and holds wins over former title holders like Coetzee and contenders like Tillis, Williams and Ribalta. Bizzarro had only faced 8 guys with winning records when he got to Duran. Those records were 1-0, 14-12-1, 16-7-1, 15-8, 44-27, 40-13-3, 24-8-2, 33-13-1. And whereas a whole deal got made when Bruno tagged Tyson, nobody mentions how Bizzarro dropped Duran twice for uncalled KD's. 6-2 Tyson

    9th title defence:
    Carl Williams vs Alvaro Rojas

Is Williams the worst challenger of Tyson's reign ? Yes. Is he better than Alvaro Rojas ? Also yes. Williams was ranked in the top 10 and had beaten a title holder in Trevor Berbick. He was as high as #2 when he got to Tyson. Rojas was an unranked challenger with no credentials to challenge anyone at the world level. 7-2 Tyson

So it's clear that in the amount of defences they do share, Tyson destroys Duran.

"But Duran has 3 more defences left!"

    Fine, let's add them.

Fernandez: Solid, legitimate win. Doesn't have much aside from Arguello, but that is excellent, even if it was catching lightning in a bottle.

Viruet: Weak challenger, with his only notable win being a very green Fernandez who had just lost and would lose right after the Viruet bout.

De Jesus: Great fighter, but doesn't compensate for the gap between the rest of Duran and Tyson's challengers.

Tyson’s challengers, Spinks, Holmes, Tucker, Smith, Tubbs, Thomas and Bruno, are simply a stronger group than Ishimatsu, Fernandez, Viruet, Thompson, Robertson, Ortiz, Rojas, Bizzarro, and Takayama. Seriously, Takayama and Rojas weren't even ranked in the top 10 in any division. De Jesus x2 doesn't make up for the gap in quality.

And Tyson didn’t struggle with his challengers.

    Duran often did.

This is the epitome of BoxRec scouting. You’re just staring at records and win-loss columns instead of actually looking at the fighters.

The thing you're ignoring is that Lightweight is a shark tank and Heavyweight is a kiddy pool. There are millions of 135lb men on Earth, while there’s maybe ten guys over 220lbs who can actually move their feet. To even get ranked in the top ten at LW, you need a level of skill and mastery that very few Heavyweights are even capable of. At HW, you just need to be big and have a pulse. That’s why guys like Bonecrusher or Tubbs, even though they were "top ten", were just stationary targets who wouldn't be top 50 in a division with actual depth.

You bring up Holmes and Spinks, but let's remember Holmes was 38, coming off a two-year layoff from his couch, and wasn't remotely prepared to fight. Spinks was a blown-up Light Heavyweight with shot knees who looked like he saw a ghost before the bell even rang. Neither of them comes close to a guy like Esteban De Jesus, who had more skill in his left big toe than Tyson’s entire resume combined.

Duran "struggled" because he was fighting guys who actually knew how to box. Tyson’s reign looks better on paper only because he was blasting dudes who didn't even know how to clinch or use a jab, yet were still somehow ranked. As soon as Tyson fought someone who wasn't scared and had a basic game plan (Douglas), he folded. Duran reigned for nearly a decade in the most competitive era of the deepest division in boxing history. It’s not even close.

I think both of them fought a fairly average set of challengers overall.
Duran won the title from a far superior fighter than Tyson did, and De Jesus would have been champ for a long time if not for Duran too.

Tyson's streak, roughly from Ferguson to Williams, is one of the best in boxing, certainly in the heavyweight division. It's hard to find anything as impressive... but in terms of his overall career, Duran is better!

It says Tubbs instead of Biggs. Also, a top ten comparison would give a better picture.

We just gonna pretend that Mike didn’t lose to his 42-1 underdog challenger?

Last I checked, Roberto handled his business when he fought massive underdogs.

So I’ll give Mr. Tyson a minus-10 for that one.

Roberto Duran’s lightweight reign >>>>>>>> Mike Tyson’s heavyweight reign.

Next time, include ALL the fights and all the facts.

You might want to check thr Kirkland Laing or Lawlor fight.

And I'm not sure if you're suggesting to skip the Ruddock fights, but those were a big deal.

Are you suggesting that the Laing and Ruddock fights fit into a discussion of their (initial) title reigns? Because neither Roberto nor Mike were champs when those fights happened, lol.

Duran very nearly killed Lampkin, put him in the hospital, so not sure what your point is there.

Mike himself would slap you for calling him greater than Duran. He'd laugh at you and tell you that he's nowhere close to Duran.

    I meant Lawlor.

I'm suggesting that it makes more sense to compare Duran's run at 135 and 140 with Tyson's run until prison.

Not sure if Tokyo Douglas was actually worse than De Jesus either.

Tyson's title reign and overall resume of wins ARE underrated though. But Jesus Christ, you unnecessarily kill Mike's credentials putting him in this comparison.

You know, Lampkin is Scottish for "The kin of a lamp." I don't know if that changes your opinion or not but it certainly changes mine.
