As much as I hate to encourage the thread starter or back his ridiculous thread, Spinks was a former light heavyweight who had only made the jump to heavyweight 3 or 4 fights earlier, and had done nothing at heavyweight since he beat Holmes except beating up on Cooney, who Holmes had already smashed 4 or 5 years earlier.

That said, even if we disregard both that an aging Holmes or Spinks are still high quality fighters, (especially since Holmes would years later embarrass Ray Mercer and give Holyfield a tough night) and that while both were past their prime neither was "shot to ****" we still have Ruddock, (especially the version Tyson fought), Tony Tucker, Biggs, Bruno, and Golota who would at least give Povetkin a hard time, and are probably equally or more proven resume wise. (And that's still leaving out the aging Pinklon Thomas that Tyson fought, Bonecrusher smith, etc.)

I wouldnt exactly call handing Larry Holmes his first two losses doing nothing at heavyweight. He wasn't just a light heavyweight either, he was one of the best ever light heavyweights.

Either way there were a lot of guys on Tyson's resume that would beat the **** out of Povetkin.

Holmes was 38 years old, definitely past it but never stopped the way he was against anyone but Mike. Even after that fight, no one came close to doing that to Holmes.

    Spinks was shot?

I meant to say that Spinks hadn't done anything since beating Larry Holmes... going to go back and edit that now.

    Ahhh....

Ruddock would CLEARLY have been the third best HW today and he would have been VERY dangerous for especially Wlad. Even Vitaly would have had his hands full with Razor Ruddock.

he beat beat a 48-0 larry holmes and then a 48-1 larry holmes, that was in 1986 he fought tyson in 1988. what excatly was he supposed to be doing after that except trying to get money fights and retire? while stefan tangstead was no world beater, it still was only the second heavyweight he had ever faced since fighting 175 pound guys and he knocked him out.
he pulls out of an HBO tourney to unify the belts because he was offered several million bucks more to fight Cooney..and siad "**** that ibf belt"
cooney is everyones punch line but he had one loss and that was to holmes and was 6 foot 7 and 235 pounds and Spinks destroyed him. you have cruiserweights like banks, huck ,mormeck who move up to heavyweight who wont and cant knock out anyone, same with the adameck. alot of sports and boxing insiders had picked spinks over tyson.... spinks would have beat the hell out of povetkin . period

Indeed, plenty of people within the sport predicted a Spinks win. It was easily one of the biggest events and fights of the decade. Would seem Tyson's performance has actually devalued the win to some people.

That's all true, but a lot of people have never really loved Spinks getting the decision against Holmes. Common perception is that Spinks just fought negatively and did just enough to make rounds arguable. I've only seen a few clips of the fights because I was too young to see it back then and haven't really had a major to watch it since, but Holmes was getting rather ripe for the taking and still both decisions were razor close.

After that, well, perception was that he was sitting on the sidelines while the real action was passing him by. He fought a nobody and Cooney, who for all his size and punching ability, was a guy rushed into a title fight because he was white. There was a pretty obvious difference in Cooney's level and that of anyone who was a B level heavyweight or better. Who can you name that Cooney beat while they were still relevant? (A Ken Norton whose previous bouts consisted of a 1st round KO, a draw with Scott Le Doux and a split decision over Cobb doesn't count as relevant to the title picture).
