I thought the interview with Mike on Sky Sports News was brilliant and insightful. Does anybody know what Johnny Nelson meant at the end when he shook Tysons hand and said " Thanks Mike, you saved my life" Totally confused by that. I have just finished Nelsons autobiog and the only reference to Tyson in that is when Nelson and Tyson had a row after Tyson beat Savarese and later that night they had words in the hotel lift.
The videos in Griff's thread if anyone missed it :good Yeah, the Nelson thing got me thinking as well. He seemed quite serious and Mike tried to pass it off like it was nothing.
i assumed that mikes inspiration got him into boxing and got johnny away from potentially a life of crime
Haha its a bit different than that, Nelson was trying to talk his way into a big pay day, not counting on the fact they'd be sharing a lift in the very near future, and needed a change of underwear. http://www.johnnynelson.co.uk/index.php/in-the-news/91-small-talk.html
Might look this up, I love Tyson interviews. Never seems to give the obvious answers that active fighters often do, he usually has something interesting to contribute
i know its old news and im going off track here a little, but does anyone know the reason why nelson and hamed fell out ?
Fire away. There was a bear and a rabbit in the woods and the bear said to the rabbit: "Do you have problems with **** sticking to your fur?" The rabbit replied: "No". So the bear picked him up and wiped his ass with him! Nice one, Johnny. I once tried to tell that joke to Frank Warren's son and when he heard the word "****" he jumped between us like a referee stopping a fight, shouting: "No! No! NO!"
God i used to know this, if i rattle my brain a little i think it has something to do with Naz saying he had a million dollar HBO contract lined up for Johnny, and he'd OK'd it etc with Dibella, who was the top Exec at HBO at the time, well anyway a very excited Johnny Nelson comes across Dibella at some swanky bowtie dinner and Dibella has no idea who the hell he is, and basically tells him to eff off lol Ok not quite, here's the story according to MR Frank Warren "Naseem Hamed was a gym mate of his and pestered me to sign up Johnny. I told Naz if Johnny was fighting in my back garden I'd close the curtains but I eventually did a deal with him and he had a couple of really good wins. Nelson's friendship with Hamed soured though - when Naz went off on his own, he told Johnny he'd sorted out a multi-fight, £1million deal with HBO. I remember phoning Lou Di Bella, at that time head of HBO, from my office, with Johnny present. "Who is Johnny Nelson?" asked Di Bella. He hadn't even heard of him, let alone offered him a deal!" Nelson of course took the higher road, and decided to have nothing more to do with Naz, except slag him off every chance he got, my personal favourite being after the 9/11 attacks, saying Naz has to come out and choose which side he's on, ours (the west) or theirs (the terrorists). Here's the actual quote, Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck would be proud, ...."A lot of people have said that as a British Muslim he should have stood up and said how wrong it was. But we haven't heard that from him. Instead he has laid low and kept quiet. Is he with us or against us? The Western world has put money in his pocket. He's a wealthy individual so why doesn't he stand up and say, 'Look, you supported me so I support you'?
^ I don't know whether to agree or disagree with Nelson on that last statement. Both seem logical as why should Naz say anything, he is no politician but then he was a role model at that time.. Oh and yeah Naz did say something to the media, he did condemn 9/11..let me try and remember when he said it. and so Naz lied to Nelson about the 1 mill deal or did he just made Nelson believe there was going to be a deal made? I would have thought naz did something or was involved in something that affected nelson's life not career?
I thought Mike Tyson for the most part chatted aload of ****. Its very clear to anybody, that Mike Tyson does not really follow boxing like he used to and to be honest he's not very educated on fighters careers. OF TODAY. He did'nt even know who David Haye was alittle over a year ago, i can remember he was asked about David Haye during some interview and he said..........he did'nt know who he was. I love Mike Tyson, as all of you know. But the guy has a way with words, and he can hypnotize people by chatting ****. But i like the bit where he pointed out the fact that David Haye is a runner/Hayerunner. I would like to hear somebody like Roy Jones Junior's opinion on this fight. He still studies the sports and follows fighters careers. Along time ago before David Haye had even got any titles on the BBC, he said that he based his style on Roy Jones Junior. Roy Jones Junior knew of this, and has followed David Haye for a long time.
