Interesting interview with Mike Tyson conducted by John Madden prior to his fight with Buster Mathis jr.

Mathis made him look bad until Tyson finally woke up and took a step to the side and laid him out with an uppercut, in the fourth round if I recall.

Interesting interview, thanks for posting it.

When Mike was first scheduled to fight Buster it was set for MGM in Las Vegas the same night Bowe & Holyfield were due to meet in their classic 3rd fight... When Dennis Frinfrock realised that MGM ticket sales were struggling on the eve of the event they caved in and claimed that Mike had injured a thumb in sparring... I was at the weigh in for the Holyfield fight when Flip Homanski interrupted with copies of the x-rays of Tysons thumb .. Everyone present began shouting, what the hell did this have to do with the Holy v Bowe fight.. The Thumb was a faked injury and it was the only way MGM would have saved face for Mike and his credibility..... I watched Mathis strolling around a hotel later that evening where a small show was due to take place.. (The Alladdin, for Obed Sullivan v Jorge luis Gonzales..) Surprizing enough Gonzales pulled out of his fight and that one fell out also.. I had a walk with Buster and he was heartbroken.. All of the other fighters on that card were too.. Akinwande was due to fight Tony Tucker in his largest fight of his career.. and a grudge match between John Ruiz and Jerry Ballard was also ruined.. Buster actually thought he would never get the chance to fight Mike, his father had just passed and he looked lonely.. Eventually Buster , Akinwande and tucker all got thier fights on the Philly show at the spectrum.. and the Ruiz v Ballard fight was rescheduled for the undercard of another big night of boxing when Holyfield fought Vaughn Bean in his hometown of Atlanta Georgia, with Ruiz Ko'ing Ballard in a very tough fight.. Buster was Ko'd , Tucker was stopped , and Jerry was killed by a man in a nightclub a year after fighting Ruiz.. Stabbed in the neck..in Maryland..

Boxing like Mikes story is full of hard luck..
