Mike Tyson is a very classy ambassador for the sport.

I know, that sounds weird. Nobody would have thought it possible 15-20 years ago...but he actually has developed into maybe the nicest and most actively fan-involved ATG out there...at least among the heavyweight ex-champs. Lewis is by all accounts a sweet guy but is somewhat aloof, not seen or heard from much within the sphere of boxing since HBO terminated him as commentator. Holyfield gives lots of interviews sharing his opinions regarding the current scene and shows up ringside at events, but isn't exactly a saint. Tyson actually straddles both, and does more public appearances than both combined, to say nothing of his promotional ventures. This is a guy that has clearly always had a love of the game, and of the fans, counting himself among their (our) number.

He posted this Periscope live stream earlier tonight:

He also provides guidance to young kids in the amateur program, does expos and events all over the world, and is said to always be up for a quick autograph signing or photo op with anybody that walks up to him no matter where his distinctive face is spotted.

    No, but thanks for playing.

Because he is always patient and jovial with the fans and goes above & beyond in a way that most celebrities of his stature (let alone boxers) tend not to.

Case in point the girls in the video who tried crowding in for a group pic. Someone like a Floyd Mayweather you could see just sitting back and letting his security detail usher the girls away for making things a little confusing and chaotic. Mike just steps up and calmly explains they have to go by turns in a friendly and non-patronizing way and goes the extra mile to make them feel good about the experience by flirting a little saying he could see the resemblance in their eyes and knew they were sisters, AND he takes one girl's cell phone and has a little chat with their dad.

I've met lots of boxers and some are real gems, but Mike - at least in his mature current form - is among the coolest and most approachable. That's with having more of an excuse than most retired pugs to not have time for the little people, given what a busy schedule he keeps (promoting, talk shows, his own stage production, movies, the animated series...)

Tyson is the man. He's come a long way, and is basically an encyclopedia of the sport. Also, he is beloved by many.

He's a good guy and has truly turned his life around and you're 100% correct IB.....however I never imagined that would ever be the case 20 years ago when he was raping people and biting people's ears off.

Somehow people are still intrigued by him. He is a true celebrity. I think he is the only boxer well respected in all forms of combat/fighting sports. I think people see a change for the better in his persona.

...and controversy (and personal tragedy) has followed him even until fairly recently. You would think he would have every reason to be self-destructive in his middle age but if anything he seems to be healing old wounds and becoming more stable even in times of mounting adversity.

Mike Tyson's bad image is mainly media hype. Ive met him several times over the years & he has always acted like a gent to all. I wish everyone could get a chance to talk to him he really is a walking boxing encyclopedia.
Someone mentioned on of Ali's fights & Mike amazed everyone by listing every one of Ali's fights from his pro debut Tunny Hunsaker to the final travesty. Another thing he did showed class A well endowed woman wearing a tee shirt & obviously no bra asked him to sign
"Across Here". Mike looked at her & said I'll sign a pic for you Maam that's all" She cussed him out.. He said afterwards " Can you imagine what would have happened if I'd touched her? It happens all the time"
Mike had had a very unhappy life I wish him nothing but the best in the future

Tyson has really mellowed out and not allowed all that dough he owed the IRS and others to bring him down.
He started making the change when China made him their Boxing ambassador. I'm not sure of what happened there but I'm sure his reading of Mao had something to do with his selection and visits to China.
I was very impressed with the quality of bouts he managed to put together under the Iron Mike Promotion company, and he provided the networks with some very good competitive matches. All of a sudden they stopped and I wonder if the IRS made it impossible for him to continue.
I feel that Mike would make a very good trainer to pass on some of Cus's training techniques. If Atlas with his limited knowledge can do it, I'm sure Tyson could do better.

It's an interesting case. How many other rapists do people believe are genuinely reformed? Or welcome back in to society?

I was watching a netflix's show called champs, which was about Tyson, Holyfield and Hopkins and how they grew up. Mike really earned my respect in that show.

His son had just died and another parent in the hospital who's child had also just died came up to Mike and gave him his condolences. He said he was shocked. He said who the **** am I to get condolences from this guy when his child died too. He said that made him realize the world doesn't revolve around him, he's just a human being like the next guy is. It seemed to really have touched him.

When you see how these fighters grew up in the ghetto, no fathers, school frowned upon, needing quick money to eat, which leads to criminality you have to appreciate anyone who can overcome that. And like Tyson says, poverty hurts and you never forget it. Boxers have no unions, they don't have money managers, or lawyers or anything else that much of the sporting world takes for granted, and they're only a permanent injury away from loosing everything they spend years and years accumulating.

But in Mike's case, once your signature is worth money, you should never really go broke, at least not twice.
