This is EXACTLY how I see it. He wasn't finding a way to quit rather than fouling the only way he could. He had to one up Holyfield in a way. Strange that I describe it that way but it rings true with me.

He had a low, low ring IQ. He panicked in his own way; By flipping out and fouling out.

I don't think he WANTED out anymore. I think he lost his damn mind, just as he describes it today. A stupid young man making a stupid, stupid mistake. He made a slew of them, it makes sense.

ive been saying this for years

In both the Douglas and Holy fights, Tyson was the aggressor (careless aggressor walking into punches), but he was the one pushing the action.

You dont mentally quit and be an aggressor at the same time, it doesnt work.

Surely if Tyson had mentally quit in these fights, he would have got on his high horse?

James Tillis was of interest to me in 1981 and 1982, but after giving up his lead against Mike Weaver and blowing his title shot in '81 for the WBA title I began having my wonders about him... Than in 1982 Tillis was game, but still KTFO by Greg Page down in Texas... I knew then Tillis would never be a real solid top-5 heavyweight ever again...

By May 1986, Tillis was in-shape and still game and managed one real last spirited effort on the world class level, but at best Tillis only won 3 rds against Mike Tyson in that 10 rounder.... Tyson was still green at that point, but he won the fight without doubt.....

    97 to 93---TYSON!

i know.....and it was james tillis and not ali.

a much superior tyson over the next few years vs a far superior boxer of that style than tillis, say 73-74 ali......my comparison stands.

I don't think there's much of a distinction. A fighter losing his cool and self-control to that degree is more or less the same as a fighter quitting. He's trangressed the boundaries to a point way out there.

It doesn't matter if he bit the ear (twice), or turned away and said "No Mas", or pulled out his pecker and swung it at Holyfield's wife.
It's not the behaviour of a man who knows he wants IN. He might as well want OUT then.

I have all of Tyson's fights (among many other boxers as well) on dvd, and i watch them a lot. I have studied Tyson for nearly 30 years. It just so happens i watched the Tillis fight again for the 10th time just last week lol. I had that fight 8-2 for Tyson, maybe 7-3 at worst. It was a pretty good fight though considering everything. Tillis definitely came to fight. I don't think he was intimidated by Tyson at all, which imo contributed greatly to his decent performance.
