I had the extract saved somewhere, but can't find it after looking...

Anyway, Tyson kicked Rooney from the '89 Bruno camp to "punish" him for siding with Bill Cayton against Dung King. Then Rooney sued Tyson for $1mill for not sticking to a verbal contract made in front of Cus, that Tyson would be trained by Rooney for all of his fights throughout his entire career. Before the suing, Tyson had been saying "He's my man, he's with me!" & defending Rooney, but afterwards he didn't want anything to do with him, & vowed to never forgive him.

I hope somebody can find the actual source with the word-for-word version.

The question is would tyson have become the greatest heavyweight champion of all time if Rooney had not been fired?

I think he would have kill Douglas. Holyfield? I don't know.

I know you're not getting the answer you're looking for Terry but it's pretty straightforward. There's variations but it all comes down to King.

King all the blame falls on King just imagine how Tyson's career would have been if he had stayed with Rooney.

Don King was the worst possible guy Tyson could hang around. King let Tyson do whatever he wanted to do.
Jay Bright and Aaron Snowell were personal friends of Tyson's, going way back together. They were very close.
I would not be at all surprised if it wasn't Tyson's idea to get them in. Don King probably just let Tyson have his way.

As to why Rooney was let go...who can say? Maybe he was the last link to Cus that King wanted gone.
King wanted 100% full control of Tyson.
I think King knew as well as anyone that Rooney would not stand for the **** that went on later, like Tyson spending maybe 20 minutes in the gym and going home, or going shopping.
No Rooney= no conflict = happy Mike = happy Don. Tyson was acting like a shitbag back then, like a spoilt child.

    No.

The thing is, is that Tyson was going to act like a dickhead regardless. He believed too much in his own hype back then, and thought he was unbeatable.
It didn't help with that grinning idiot (King) blowing smoke up his butt at every turn, either.
All Rooney could have done is ***** and moan at Mike for not training properly. He couldn't make Mike train properly.

You know, the whole horse and water story.

This is pretty close to what happened as far as i can recall. The irony is that Tyson didnt trust Bill Cayton (who looked after his money yet signed up with Don King :patsch) and after Jim Jacobs died their relationship soured all the more.

Wasnt there something about Kevin Rooney telling Mike that Robin Givens was never pregnant and so the miscarrage she supposedly had was all an act to get at Mikes money. Tyson didnt like that and so him and Rooney split.

That was my take/what i remember of the situation as i heard it. Anyone else know about this who can confirm?!?

    :good

I used to have a VHS with the HBO version of Tyson V bruno 89.

Just before the main fight broadcast, Larry Merchant, possibly Jim Lampley, interviewed Rooney in schenectady NYC (if I remember rightly)

And pretty much said that he had Tyson " To be a man and honour the contract with cayton. And that he didn't see what Cayton had done wrong, and that was what got him CANNED"

Lampley said after the interview which was filmed before the transmisson that Rooney had filed a lawsuit against Tyson and that Tyson said that there was no going back.

    youre a ****ing idiot terry

people have already answered these stupid "rooney" threads for you.

once again, rooney was his trainer, who was very disciplined..and after mike made 50 million bucks at 21 years old, he didnt want rooney telling him what to do and riding his ass anymore, so he was fired.
the people that replaced him were not people from the ****ing streets, jay bright was affiliated with the cus damato family and aaron snowel was a buddy of mike tyson. had nothing to do with don king trying to "save money" . now quit pulling **** out of your ass dummy

Mike said in an interview not too long ago that he was happy to be free from Cayton and Jacobs because they were slave drivers. I took that to mean that Mike just didn't want to put in the same work that he had before. Even after all those years, he didn't seem to regret the decision.

You can't blame King for Mike's increasing lack of discipline. Mike was in the driver's seat on this one.

Jacobs himself said he was told by Cus exactly what to do when he is dead. Jacobs and Cayton were following orders from a man they respected and feared.
Cus wanted Tyson active. It kept him out of trouble and it kept him in shape. Tyson wasn't always on board with this because he was losing his motivation.

Like I noted before___even against Tucker, he left camp and talked about retirement only to be talked back into camp by his team. Which I think, was Jacobs talking to him.
Have to check out that S.I. article at some point to clarify it.

And Cayton said that had his partner, Jim Jacobs been around, Tyson would have never went with King and basically the train wouldn't have been derailed.
King knew he could come in when Jacobs died. King wasn't messing with Tyson while Jacobs was in control because he was no pushover and Jacobs had Mike's attention.

King was a vulcher waiting for the old guard to weaken and die.

But in the end, it's Tyson's fault for making the choices to leave his original team.

As for Rooney, he had his own personal problems I hear.

As far as him getting involved in Tyson's personal life__yeah__heard that too. But if Tyson needed to hear the truth then what was he going to do__sit back and see him destroyed?
    Not going to happen.
The people that tend to tell you the truth (when needed) are your Father and Brother. If that women you are dating is a *****__they'll tell you. And you might not like to hear it.

In the end, Fame, Money, Users, Trust issues__and maybe just never really wanting to be a "star" anymore or ever was what also brought him down.

    Motivation:

“I did boxing only because my step father [Tyson means Cus D’Amato] was in love with it. He wanted me to become a champion so I couldn’t disappoint him.”

Talking to the press after fighting Eddie Richardson November 13, 1985, just nine days after D’Amato’s death:
“The only way I could make Cus proud of me is by becoming champion of the world. Nothing should interfere with that. I’m going to fight in a week and am going to fight better”

Mike on the death of Cus : ‘When I’d get up in the morning, he’d make me breakfast. Now he’s not around anymore. God. I’m doing to do well, but when I come down to it, who really cares? I like doing my job, but I’m not happy being victorious. I fight my heart out and give it my best, but when it’s over, there’s no Cus to tell me how I did, no mother to show my clippings to.’

    About gold diggers:
“Everybody always want something from you. They want to find a way to get your money. Just as hard as you work in the gym there are people working that hard to separate you from your money” [Documentary: Mike Tyson Greatest Hits: 00:15:30]

Tyson talking about retirement after winning the Spink fight:
“Don King was laughing, but when he finds out I’m serious, he won’t be laughing. I don’t want to deal with this bull**** anymore….I had fun. Boxing was good to me, but nothing lasts forever….I decided it’s time to move on. It’s time to call it a day….” [Heller, 255]

Mike on discipline: ‘Without discipline, no matter how good you are, you are nothing! One day, and I might not be around, you’re going to meet a tough guy who takes your best shot. He’ll keep coming because he’s tough. Don’t get discouraged. That’s when the discipline comes in.’
