This is a match UFC fans in the beginning wanted to see Gracie was king of no rules fighting and Tyson was still looked at as the most feared man even in prison, until Gracie strted breking arms/choking guys out,he grew a cult following.....Watching this from day one I always felt Tyson had a punchers chance being he was physically stronger than Royce and leave an opening to a k.o hit on the feet ,one in which he wouldnt need full power to do so. Then I though well Gracie couldn't possibly be that stupid to remotely get near a landing punch and immeditaly wrap around Tyson legs and get him to the floor any means necessary. Gracie had fought stronger guys than Tyson, however they don't hit like him. I actually think this could go either way but wouldn't bet against Gracie here with Tysons limited knowledge outside boxing.

In a pure boxing match Tyson would dominate

I would go with Tyson. Royce never had good takedowns and had poor striking. To much of the traditional BJJ standup back then. I think he gets tagged coming in, and that's that. Clearly better on the ground but he was never elite in the BJJ world. Plus Tyson never had a long ponytail to grab on to.

I'd go with a strong wrestler, even with their poor striking on the ground to have the best chance at Tyson.

In a pure boxing match Tyson would atomize him.

Unless the ring was 60ft a side and Royce had running shoes.

If Gracie would have gotten him down (Good chance of it), then Tyson would have been ****ed. Tyson would have always had a chance of landing a good shot before he went down, but I'm sure Gracie would have shot in really low on him like Couture did to Toney to avoid the punch.

Something scary to imagine though, think Tyson's striking combined with a black belt level jiu-jitsu pedigree.

I don't think it would have went that smooth I see gracie forcing Tyson down to the floor on his back, with Tyson on top,Tyson then getting subbed froma choke or arm lock resembling the Dlucia fight where he hyper extended the arm,as Tyson said he would not have ample time to win these types of fights..had Tyson bit Royce well ask the last guy who did that in the octagon what happened. this type of fight is either won or lost instantly which is why I say gracie slight favored here.but he is favored anyone who follows this from that era of it knows this.

Royce Gracie? He was a much smaller man. Tyson: It doesn’t matter. If I hit him with a good punch, OK, but if he gets hold of me and in a position I’m not familiar with, I’m not going to win the fight. I would have to be equipped with grappling skills as well. Gracie changed the whole game around. To be involved in this kind of fight, you have to know that style right off the bat.
Everyone learned his style of fighting. Everything we have now is because of the Gracies taking it to the next level. Their name isn’t on it, but that’s what it is. It’s Gracie Fighting.

Was Royce even a great BJJ practitioner?

No. Choked out easily by Wallid Ismail in no time limit no points BJJ match. Special rules that Royce demanded, nothing new there. Yoshida while not considered great at newaza was in full control of their grappling match (with some modified rules of course).

Was never good enough to compete in ADCC or BJJ worlds like Renzo or Royler. Would have been eaten alive.

People forget, Tyson wasn't just some boxer, he was a street fighter too.

Tysons just being humble here.

If he'd have said "Oh id beat Gracie" people would be up in arms.
