Mike Tyson on today's heavyweight scene

things started going bad in the late nineties if you ask me. There was this pandering to the media that sports usually have kept minimal up till then.

I am talking about that star paradigm, where our heroes HAVE to look good, polished and live up to a media image of being acceptable and ONLY THEN will they be accepted as a marketing tool and be allowed to make it to the top. Footballers have increasingly been included in teams for having good looks and being sellable (David Beckham is a good example, getting in the squad everytime despite being only a single function (crosser/deadballer) player) than actually being functional for the current team.

Perhaps its happening in boxing too, where if your face isnt sellable, then you arent going to make it to a title level even if you have the talent, whereas if your face is marketabley goodlooking (despite you being a pizza monster) then you will get a title shot (eg a typical Klit opponent).

 

I hate racist K2 Fans. It makes k2 LOOK BAD.

Does calling him 'iron mike' make you feel closer to him? Mike Tyson's opinions change day by day. This HW Era is horrible, and Mike Tyson know it but he don't give a ****. Tyson know he had like a 2 year run of greatness and then it ended. After that he was just fighting for money. If Tyson cannot see that everyone other then k2 is pure garbage , maybe that beating he received in Memphis damaged him even worse then we thought.

i THINK you are mistaking knowledge about boxing and boxing itself. Tyson is a boxer. I study boxers. There are many many many Kobe Bryant fans who know more about players in the 60's then kobe himself.

What does money uni and cars have to do with boxing? You do realise tyson spent the whole of his youth watching studying countless boxing films of past fighters plus also actually talking to them one on one. You some snot nosed kid talking about money and cars knows better??

What Mike's saying is important and true, but skills haven't improved in the HW division.

The average technique in the division is limited, and many don't really fight,
but just walk towards their oppenents like somethings going to happen and then hugs

Already mentioned, the popularity of the sport has declined, and so has the quality.

The worst thing IMO is that the klits don't even seem to try and make the fights exciting. Not blaming them alone,
but especially wlad seems scared to death to throw anything else than a jab at times. It's awkward and painful to watch at times.

I'd rather give Vitali credit he at least seem to like a good fight, the worst fight with kevin johnson was not his fault.

You can say that Wlad is smart with his fragile chin, and has done well in recent years,
but i really think he should take more chances, just looks robotic and uninterested to often

He realises what people in most sports do,that they evolve and get better over time.

Skills become better, athletes become bigger,stronger,faster etc.

Why do you think Vitali brutally beat up Adamek? Because he was such a better boxer than him?

How about Chambers/Wlad? Haye/Wlad?

You think those fights would have been so one sided if there hadnt been 5+ inches and 30-40 lbs weight difference??

Theres weight divisions dfor a reason. Size, strength, height all give fighters major advantages.


Johnson,Louis, Liston, Ali,Foreman were all considered big for their eras, and were either taller or heavier than nearly all their opponents.

The last 20 years of heavyweight boxing has been dominated by 6'5 240+ lbs heavyweights,like Lewis, Bowe, and the Klitschkos bros.

Its just common sense,that some people refuse to accept.

Dempsey/Marciano etc are ATG's because of what they did in THEIR eras. Comparing them head to head with the likes of Lewis/Klitschkos is just stupid.

 

Nay.. you still need skills and speed. From primo carnera to valuev. I very much agree with the statement that a good big guy almost always beats a good small guy, BUT the big guy has to be good, cause what big guys gain in size they lose in agility etc. look at how small guy Tyson, Frazier, Patterson etc. have done.

Of course you need skills etc, but you have a distinct advantage being heavier,taller, etc.

People got up in arms about Marquez(a big lightweight) fighting Mayweather(a small welter) when on fight night there was only about 2 inches and 5 lbs between them.

There was 35 lbs and 5 inches seperating Wlad and Chambers.

To Oovercome a size differential, to need to be a LOT better fighter than your opponent.

Tyson wasnt actually that small for his era. When he fight in the 80s, he fought practically no one who outweighed him by more than 10 lbs.

His muscular development was off the charts for a heavyweight of his era.

Frazier was not small for his era. He'd be small by TODAYS standards. Look at his record and you'll find he was bigger than a large number of his opponents.

In the 70s a 225 lbs heavyweight was considered massive.
