Nice work as always. I think the pinky fight is my fav example of that oft debated "when was mike at absolute prime?" But bc it wasn't a title fight I get that it's not as noticeable. Mike looked good in the bruno rematch but bruno was also a perfect style matchup for Mike a relatively slow and chinny stand in front fighter whom he also had already knocked out. Bruno has gotten his title finally he was scared of Mike and was ready to retire. So I dunno if Mike really had a swan song fight or if bruno was just destined to make mike look good.
Thank you. Actually the Pinklon fight was a title fight. Tyson defended the unified WBC/WBA. And Bruno may have been intimidated by Mike given the outcome when they first fought. But Tyson was much sharper that night than he had been in years, and in my opinion, he was NEVER that sharp ever again.
Oh you're right for some reason I had it in my head he fought thomas on the way to berbick not after.
Great Rums. Though I don't agree with Spinks as #1, because I always thought he lost both Holmes fights, and he would never be able to stand up against massive punchers with good chins, being the reason he ducked Tucker for instance.
Best H/W I ever saw when in his prime. He would have annihilated any of today's crop. Maybe Usyk could have done something with him. All the rest would have been a case of tim-ber. Those big guys just wouldn't have been quick enough to deal with him. His top 5 wins in my book: 1. Larry Holmes KO4 - A devastating kayo of an ATG H/W who was only ever stopped once in his career. 2. Michael Spinks KO1 - An historically significant win in the most hyped fight of any in my time as a boxing fan. Didn't fully showcase Tyson's true fury which is why I have it at 2. It didn't last long enough to do that. 3. Pinklon Thomas KO6 - Devastating stuff. I can still feel those concussive punches thudding into Thomas' head. 4. Trevor Berbick KO2 - I once saw a guy knock someone down three times with one punch. 5. Tyrell Biggs KO7 - Always nice adding the scalp of an undefeated Olympic gold medalist to the resume. Did so in devastating style in this one. While I agree with Rummy's assessment of the second Bruno win, I wouldn't have any of his performances post-Spinks on a best of list. Tyson no longer did the training required to perform at the pointy end of the sport post-Spinks. I wouldn't have the Tony Tucker fight on there either although that one did show that in his prime, Mike Tyson could roll up his sleeves & work hard for 12 rounds if he had to when things didn't go his own way. Post-prime, he couldn't do that.
He was sharper v Spinks, he never found that level of focus again after 1988 and Rooney left his camp.
Tyson often turned southpaw to get an angle for his right hook, he used to throw a lot of right hooks from a squared stance also, his angles were awesome. This content is protected
Mike would often turn southpaw to land his right hook, he used to throw more right hooks than any other orthodox heavyweight in history, very well-schooled figter indeed.
Which is why I said, regarding Bruno II - "Tyson was much sharper that night than he had been in years, and in my opinion, he was NEVER that sharp ever again."
