Some of this is very cool. A highly controlled look at Tyson's reasonably becalmed camp (only compared to what came after) that weird delay before Holmes came to the ring (anyone know the details here) and Sugar Ray's "I know that guy from somewhere..." when the camera lights on Marvin Hagler pre-fight. Definitely worth an hour of your time, especially for the decisive knockout in what would have been a boring fight, probably, at any other weight. I thought Holmes had some good minutes though, for all his inactivity means he probably never won a round. The one-two Tyson landed on Holmes was spectacular ... Holmes had a couple of moments in this fight but they were fleeting to say the least ... I don't see prime Holmes ever defeating a prime Tyson
Lol Holmes doesn't beat prime Tyson If they fought 10 times he might win once or twice but never convincingly and gets KOed the other 9 or 8 fights The only time he looked decent in the entire fight was when he was imitating Ali ... And that's not really his style and he can't keep that up with Tyson ... Holmes is a great boxer but legacy wise he'll be forgotten because he came after Ali and before Tyson ... And H2H I have him losing to both prime for prime
The only time he looked decent? You mean as a 37 past his prime 2 year layoff Holmes as opposed to a 78 to 82 Holmes that would have made Tyson quit
When I was younger and watched the fight (without knowing the result), I started going insane when Larry started dancing on his toes, and throwing that legendary jab. I thought, "MAYBE, just maybe" then Tyson hit him with that huge right hand and decked him 2 seconds later and I'm like "OK never mind"
I agree with this. There are a few seconds that make me blink to this day every time I see the start of it. But yeah, far too passive to beat Mike.
No He doesn't have the power or movement or speed or defense to beat Tyson. Tyson would counter him any time he would try and mount any offense in their actual fight ... It would be the same thing if it was prime Larry Holmes. Holmes has decent durability but Tyson is second to none in finishing ability. A jab is not enough to beat a prime Tyson.
IIRC, Holmes in the negotiations got the rights to the film of this fight — particularly painful I’m sure to Jimmy Jacobs and Bill Clayton, who had assembled their great fight collection and in particular of course owned all of Tyson’s fights. Except this one, haha. Not sure if Larry gets residuals off this or he ultimately sold it to Jacobs and Clayton, but he had leverage in the negotiations and made them concede on that point.
How else could it have been diferent? Are you saying you would have rather never seen the match happen? We never would have gotten prime vs prime, and even if Holmes hadn't been 'retired' I don't think the fight would have gone any different. At least Holmes went out and fought him, it pretty much made the passing of the torch official, it was an important chapter in both fighters legacies
I agree, but ironically it was when he actually started to open up, that led to his downfall. The first minute or so of the round gave Larry a false sense of security, as even the commentator (forgot which one) notes that he looked a lot more confident than he did earlier. But he wasn't winning going to win that night, no matter what he did.
Look we can go back and forth all day. Its something I have no desire to do nor will you change my opinion. Tyson never won the big one against a top quality opponent. Prime Holmes is better than anyone Tyson ever faced. Prime Holmes spanks him and that's all I got to say on the subject.
Lol and who did Holmes beat that was "top quality"? An older Norton? One dimensional Shavers? Gerry Cooney? You are criticizing Tyson for what Holmes was criticized for ... Not logical. Tyson beat everyone who was worth anything from his debut until 89. His career wasn't as good as Holmes but Tyson in his prime is at like top 5 H2H. He destroyed Spinks who Holmes went life or death with.
From what I recall, the delay was Tyson gloved up and there wasn't a representative from Larry's camp to watch him get his hands wrapped. So they made Tyson remove his gloves and rewrap his hands. Which is why he punched the wall.
