Irrelevant !!! it does matter what Douglas was ready to do or who he was listening for the count .. What does matter is the out side time keeper count had counted Douglas out .. regardless if douglas was following ref count or not . It was the same situation in the fight between Ali and Liston , by the time Walcott had regain order in the ring , the out time keep had counted liston out thus ending the fight with out walcott counting out liston ..
So what you are saying is that Douglas fought the fight of his life, was not truley KO'd as he could have gotten up by the count of 4 if need be but we should have taken that victory away from him and penalized him for a ref's mistake.
Yes, but many of us don't think "Douglas should have been counted out." By saying that, you are taking the position that if the referee had picked up the count properly, there is no way Buster would have gotten up. I think it's highly likely he would have gotten up even if the ref had picked up the count properly. He was listening to the ref. He didn't seem to be so hurt that a couple of seconds would have made that much of a difference.
That ref never ref`ed another boxing match again. Iv watched that fight so many times and its clear as day it was a blatant long count and the ref made a bad error. I dont think Douglas was awarded the title until after the enquiry.
dude will you stop bringing up ****ing douglas this isn't about him , this about a ref who made a huge error and why wasn't it corrected .. just because a guy fight his hart does mean you should ignore the rules and bend them in his favor. and who to say the ref didn't stop the comeback of tyson life ..
How can I not talk about douglas. If he was stumbling around the ring as the ref counted slowly I would say that you have a legitamite argument but that was not the case. He was not KO'd and absolutly would not have been counted out even if the ref picked up the count with the timekeeper. He would have simply gotten up 3 seconds sooner that's it. There were no rules bent in his favor. The ref made a mistake. The official result at the time of a fight is never overturned unless there is concrete proof on intentional wrong doing. As long as we are going to revisit this why not revisit every fight where a ref made a mistake and change those results as well. Every slip and was incorrectly ruled a KD or every KD that was incorrectly ruled a slip. Every legal blow that was incorrectly ruled low and cost a fighter a point that made a difference in a fight. Let's not ever announce a winner after any fight until the tape has been reviewed and it can be shown that the ref did not make any mistakes that may have benefited the other fighter. Your official count would have given Tyson 3 extra seconds to KO a fighter that wasn't really hurt. Nothing more, nothing less.
Its the sole reason boxing created the outside time keeper in the first place to eliminate inconsistency like this , and regardless of who Douglas was looking at or not , the fact remain the time keepers count had counted him OUT
should walcott have started the count from 1 even though the time keeper had counted him out and ruled the fight a KO in Ali's favor ? could liston state "hey I was waiting for the ref to count over me before i got up" NO , he couldn't... why because the outside official had officially counted him out, the same rule should have applied to Douglas .. Look no one is crying about this , Im just pointing out the Ref ****ed up big time and Im surprised no one caught this at the time. You can clearly see the time keep fingers he at 3 going on 4 when the ref starts his count. 3 second is not the point No my point is the time keeper count had reached 10 on douglas and he should have called the fight ..
Now who's talking about changing rules? Only the referee (and in some cases a doctor) can stop a fight. That's boxing 101. Boxing has lots of room for human error. How many times have we seen fights where an erroneous point deduction makes the difference in a fight or a KD is ruled a slip and that point would have made the difference in a fight. What you are suggesting would be a violation of the rules. The official decision at the time of the fight This content is protected stands unless there is concrete proof of intentional wrong doing ie steroids, a ref being paid off, judges being paid off etc.
Octavio Meyran reached a very slow count of nine when Buster bounced back up and then Meyran was looking very carefully for two seconds or more, before he said "Alright" and the bell rang. Basically, Meyran was surprised that Douglas got caught when pressing Tyson on the ropes at the end of that eight and was getting distracted as Douglas was hammering the floor during the long count, that's what I make of it. It wouldn't have been right to reverse or to oversee what happened next - can't make a right with two wrongs.
And the point most of us are making is that while it's unfortunate that the ref didn't pick up this official count, it would be wrong to punish Douglas for it. Referees sometimes make mistakes. Is this mistake so egregious that the outcome of the fight should have been changed? A lot of us obviously think no. And whether you agree or not, one of the deciding factors is the way Douglas reacted to the count. Suppose Douglas had got up at 7? Wouldn't that still have been a 10 count if the ref was 3 seconds behind the official at ringside. Many of us believe the Douglas listening to the ref should be the deciding factor, and the fact that the ringside official was ahead of the ref becomes irrelevant. Unless you can someone prove definitely that Douglas wouldn't have gotten up if the ref had picked up the count correctly, then I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. He should absolutely not be punished for a mistake an official makes, plain and simple.
Funny how some are actually debating IF the count was long:rofl The count was too long for a fact and there is even a short documentary about it.:yep So plzz don't embarass yourselfs and STFU !! :rofl
Again the out side or time keepers has the same power as the ref as witness by the Ali, liston fight . The time keeper can count a fighter out if the ref is unable to.. again this rule was in forced by the New York State Athletic commission since Sept 1 1921 ..
