This was a fight I desperately wanted to see back then. I really liked the Rock, I became a big fan of him, watching him grow and develop often on USA Tuesday Night Fights. I think he’s a bit underrated at this point post career. This fight I believe would’ve been competitive. Tyson wasn’t really Tyson any more and the Rock was a big strong guy. Rahman could get clipped and knocked out early though so he’d have to be very alert, fight Tyson like he did Tua if he does this I think he could possibly win a decision or get a late tko. Although the Rock always was a front runner so a Tyson late come from behind KO is not out of the question (though Tyson is not known for this) I’m gonna say If the Rock gets past 6 and I think he does he wins a decision. now Prime Tyson or even 1996 Tyson of the Holyfield fight destroys him.
Hahah these tyson fanboys.. At that time rahman was much more fresh and tyson was a slow Fat ass looking for a big right hand. Rahman by stoppage
Yeah I figured there was thread on this as I was looking through some old mags (working from home on lockdown) reading old articles after Rahman had upset Lewis. I remember when they were trying to make this match reading thru this thread I’m surprised so few gave Rock a shot. I’d pick him as I said in my post.
outside of the Lewis win based on how highly Corrie Sanders seems to be thought of around here I’d say Rocks win over him is probably his best. He took big punches and came back to stop Sanders.
Tyson was such a head case at this point in his career, It wouldn't surprise me at all if Rahman won. He was fresher and stable. Tyson lost every skill that made him special by 2001. 1985 to 1995 Tyson destroys Rahman, if he got out the 1st rd it would only be because he pissed Tyson off and he wanted to punish him (See Tyrell Biggs for reference.) Tyson in 2001? A winnable fight for Rahman.
Agreed. Not only Tyson was overweight and much slower than in his prime, but his stamina was non-existent. His only chance would be to take Rahman in early rounds (2-3 at most), but nobody ever stopped Rahman that early until he became completely shot and was KO'ed in 2 by Povetkin. Aggressive punchers like Tua and Sanders couldn't do it, hell even the most focused and pumped version of Lewis I've ever seen needed 4 rounds to KO Rahman in the rematch. So I can't imagine how shot Tyson would be able to take Rahman out in early rounds and after 3 rounds it would be one-way traffic in Rahman's favor
Second Tyson still had the goods to take out Rahman. Rahman had a poor defense, he couldn't counter, and was too slow to move. When forced on his backfoot, he just kind of stuck his arms straight out and hoped for the best. Thats why he was koed by Maskaeev, Lewis, Holyfield and Ruiz. Yeah, Rahman outboxed Tua but Tua was a lazy slob who wouldn't let his hands go. Tyson would never shell up like, he would take his licks but he would back Rahman into a corner and get him out of there.
