Durability isn't the key issue here, but strength is.... "Green, Smith and Tucker" were monsters of 6'4" to 6'5" tall and solid over 220 pounds.... Young was slippery, yet had little power and not strong enough to keep Tyson off for more than 4 rds....

Tyson smokes Young similar to the way he dusted Tubbs in Japan '88...

i just want to say im so proud of the classic today...young is actually LOSING a fantasy fight. granted its one he basically has zero chance of winning but that hasnt stopped the jimmy young express before

THat is true but keep in mind Tyson was not even 20 years old at the time ... very young even for his lightning fast rise ... I was kind of assuming championship years ..

LOok, in fairness to YOung, he could be frustrating for enyone and I can see a prime Young possibly decisioning a post Douglas TYson, one that had lost his will, focus and serious dedication but the best Tyson was too focused and too talented ... in my opinion ..

Are people forgetting that the kind of boxer who often beats a big puncher is the very fighter who doesn't fight a puncher on his terms, but guides the bout into fighting on his own terms and attributes. And how is it that Jimmy Young beat the fighters he did?

Given the above assumptions that people make about Young, why hasn't anyone yet argued for the superbly muscled and ripped Tyson to out-condition the flabby Young over the 15 round distance- there's an obvious argument even a 13 yo could see from a looking at a photo of Tyson's bicep flex.

Ecto's hypothetical result- Jimmy Young by psychological domination over the distance, with a tired, dispirited Tyson acquiescing to a points loss, or if mabye even a late stoppage of the Rumble-type if it was over 15 rounds and his heart gave out.

Young definitely had a solid chin but he won his big fights because he did not get hit hard or often, not because he pulled a LaMotta ... Foreman hit him once in Puerto Rico in the seventh and had him out on his feet ... he was stopped by Shavers .. the difference w Mike was that Tyson had far greater speed and in his prime did throw punches in combinations opposed to the single shot bombs of a Foreman or a Lyle or a Shavers ...

Tyson's handspeed? Could be a good point, but me thinks that if Young could slip Ali's shots or pick off Frazier's in-close combo's, he'd fair just fine with Tyson's wide arcing shots.

Ahh, I got it now... Jimmy Young would be intimidated by Tyson and stand there frozen before being dispatched? Because Shavers, Foreman and Lyle etc aren't intimidating.

Well, luckily this isn't actually as hypothetical a match-up as some think, as you can be guided by the experience of their sparring when Young was able to humble Tyson.

So to my way of think, if an old, past it Young, chosen and imported in by Tyson's people to give Mike the experience of being in the ring with a guileful fighter, was able to manage an up-and-coming Tyson and bounce combo's off his 'elusive' head and win Mike's admiration from then-after, I wonder how a younger, fitter, better conditioned Jimmy Young might have faired.

It's no suprise that while Tyson was fighting all those spastics in the lead up to his title fight that Jimmy Young's name is not among them, despite being a name of sorts and still dragging out paydays. If you didn't know any better, you'd think that Tyson sparking out Young in a round or two where Foremand and Shavers couldn't and Cooney couldn't either, etc would do wonders for Tyson's credability relative to other known Hvy punchers. Its the move I think many of our forum's posters would make where they running Tyson's management if they're posts are indicative.

But no, Tyson's people weren't stupid, he's just the kind of fighter Tyson's management would never have risked their man in there with, sparring in the safety of camp- yes, risk your dreadnought's record and reputation- hell no! They knew boxing. :bbb

Studying. Very interesting all the feints and angles.
Tyson was one of the best finishers. Im undecided
as I know much more about Tyson.

Tyson is a different beast and not a brawler.
