Let's imagine (just for a second, folks) Joe Frazier could have beat Tyson's first 27 opponents, and also gets past Trevor Berbick. Could he then get past James "Bonecrusher" Smith ? What with Bonecrusher being a big 230 pound puncher and standing 6'4, does Joe stand much chance ?? Forget for a moment that Smith couldn't even KO Marvis (... that's for those of you who STILL mistakenly believe Joe might have been better than his son ! :rofl), does Frazier have much chance of surviving 12 rounds with the Bonecrusher and getting a decision ?
It's a question of styles. Frazier with his slow start is dead meat for the very quick starting Tyson who just so happened to have ATG power in both fists. It does not pan out to be a good night for Joe unless he somehow gets through the storm and it then becomes a test of wills. However I cannot see Frazier lasting past the first few rounds. This comes from a guy who never cheered for Tyson but did indeed cheer for Frazier in every one of his bouts.
Yet for dozens of pages people have been arguing that Frazier couldn't do to Tyson's opponents what Tyson did. Tyson was oh-so-much-superior to Frazier in "just about every department", so it would be very strange for them to admit that Frazier could/did do what Tyson did. Something doesn't add up. And the burden of proof is more on Tyson and his supporters to prove their case, since EVERYONE admits Frazier's best win is better than Tyson's best win, and EVERYONE admits that Frazier never lost to opponents of as low caliber as Tyson lost to. Yet Tyson fans thinks "it's obvious" than Tyson is superior. I do NOT think the facts alone prove conclusively that Frazier is better, but it's more than way that the other way around. Like I said, it just doesn't add up.
That's sweet. now why don't we compare how many world class fighters each fought? Tyson fought Berbick Smith Biggs Tucker Tubbs Spinks Holmes Bruno x2 Ruddock x2 Stewart Williams Golota Botha Savarese Mathis (well if Joe can have credit for fighting the father, then Tyson can have credit for beating the son). So yeah, Tyson fought more bums, but he also faced more world class opposition too. I'm still waiting for that list of Fraziers Ko victims.
Until he walks into the ring with the GOAT, then he would be left looking for his gumshield on his hands and knees...
Frazier didn't start too slow against Ali in the FOTC did he? Ali was throwing every punch in the book at him.
Mike Tyson after being told he has to face Foreman.... "Mike don't leave Denver!" http://youtu.be/mKjK95aRrhc
Records don't win fights. Yeah, Tyson lost to fighters Frazier would have beaten. But only one of those losses occurred when he was at his best, against a dark horse who fought the fight of his life, and Tyson himself was badly prepared for that fight. I consider Tyson superior to Frazier based on the dominance he displayed in the 80s, against an underrated batch of contenders. His destuction of Spinks was insane and the only reason why people dismiss it nowadays is because Tyson looked like he was in a different atmosphere as a boxer. But realistically it was a pick-em fight going in, a lot of experts picked against Tyson, and Spinks would have been a handful for just about anyone. I don't think Frazier would match Tysons dominance, and as blasphemous as it may sound I think he'd pick up a loss somewhere along the road.
If you're going to throw in those names (Botha? Savarese? to be fair to Mike Tyson, you could throw in some more, better ones than that surely), then consider than Frazier fought : Ali Ellis x2 Quarry x2 Bonavena x2 Bugner Machen D.Jones Mathis (better than his son, as he subsequently proved) Chuvalo Ramos I'd easily throw in a Ron Stander or Bob Foster for a Mathis Jr. Anyway, what exactly was your point about Frazier's lack of KO wins ? He KO's several contenders, and stopped or dropped guys who weren't easy to stop or drop.
