Mike Tyson vs Joe Frazier

Ali picked Spinks to outbox Tyson.

 

How many of Frazier's losses occurred when he was at his best? :think

 

Frazier would have Foster'ed Spinks without a doubt...

 

Ali picked Norton to beat Foreman, wasn't one of his strong points I'm afraid...

 

My point was that Tyson was a better puncher than Frazier.

Sure, it's a good win.
A lot of people picked Ellis to beat Frazier, picked Quarry to beat Frazier ... these were "pick 'em fights" ... so that deserves just as much mention too. Not to mention the Ali fight.
Spinks was what he was. His HW credentials were thin. Tyson destroyed him though so it's a VERY good win. :good

And yet, even when he was past his best, physically damaged from fights having stepped up in his 12th fight and fighting an ATG in a 15 rounder in his 27th fight, and then KO'd by Foreman, he was STILL beating guys like Bugner and Quarry and giving Ali all he could handle.
Never losing to the ordinary fighters. Even the fat half-blind remains of him in 1981, after 5 years out, went 10 rounds with a strong journeyman.

So I don't agree. He'd have an easier run facing the Berbicks, Spinks, Tuckers or other guys who weren't any better than the ones he beat up... than having to go through the comebacking Ali etc.

Spinks had taken Holmes 0 away and destroyed ****ey. He was a genuine top heavyweight and proved it in the ring. There's no comparison between him and Foster, who was humbled by every heavyweight he ever fought.

Take away the Tyson loss and nobody would be talking about Spinks as some cannon fodder at heavy. He'd be compared to guys like Tunney and Norton.

 

So Frazier wasn't in his prime during the first Foreman fight?

 

But all you said was who did Frazier ever KO ?
The reply then is - Who did Tyson ever KO ?

Spinks rates above Foster. But his HW credentials are shaky.
He beat an old Holmes (probably deserved to lose rematch), Tangstad and a washed-up C00ney. His manager openly avoided the young HW contenders.

If we're really generous we can rate him near Jimmy Ellis, but Ellis did beat some of the young HW contenders, even before he faced Frazier. He'd won the WBA tournament.

Frazier would have destroyed him. Let's be realistic.

 

The only reason one may have picked Quarry or Ellis to beat Frazier was because Frazier hadn't done much going into those fights, aside from two close scuffles with Bonavena.

On the other hand Tyson was the biggest attraction of the sport, ripped apart a gauntlet of top ranked heavyweights and was considered by many to be one of the best boxers of all time...and people still gave Spinks a shot. Spinks was in a way the biggest test of Tysons career and he passed it with flying colors.

The FOTC was obviously the better win but Tyson-Spinks isn't much behind it, as far as I'm concerned.
