Bad match up for Tyson. Frazier crowds him to much for him to get comfortable, and minimizes Tysons mid-range style....wears the body down for 8 rounds and the ref saves a battered Tyson in the 10th
I would agree that Frazier is the master "in the pocket",the problem for me picking Joe is I think Tyson is superior in every other department, hand speed, two handed power,chin.size. I must therefore pick Tyson inside 6 rounds ,I think this would be Frazier v Quarry with Tyson being Frazier, and Joe being Jerry.
Good amount of truth here, if he can't get Joe out in the first 3 or four rounds Frazier will beat him up.
I too think that Tyson's power is all wrong for Joe's style , Joe will be there to be hit. My first thought was Tyson by early KO, Joe's only chance is to nail Mike with something and make him doubt, Joe is a lot stronger mentally than Mike and take him past 5.
I don't think it's clear that Tyson Hits harder. According to Larry Holmes Frazier hits slightly harder than Tyson (I can find the interview if you like) which of course is hardly conclusive, but to mind it's at least conceivable.
This is one of Larry's claims i am a bit dubious about. Frazier hit damn hard tho, no doubt about it.
Frazier got up 6 times after 6 knockdowns of George freaking Foreman. Tyson didnt once against a medeocre boxer. Frazier has so much more heart and is mentally so much tougher its crazy. It will be a good fight the first few rounds but after that Tyson is toast.
Holmes worked with Joe but did they ever go full out? I think Tyson hits harder.Frazier was a grinder who wore you down with incessant pressure, Tyson sparked you out with blistering combos. Add to that Tyson had two handed ko power and a better chin . Tyson took Ruddock's "Smash," I doubt Frazier would be erect after sampling it,I also doubt Bonavena could floor Tyson.
I cant believe people don't think Tyson's power wouldn't be an issue against Frazier and the fact Joe might have trouble hurting Tyson. It takes a solid beat down and a number of punches to finish Tyson, one of Joe's hooks wouldnt get the job done however great that punch is, imo. As a swarmer, Tyson was a super modified version, Frazier's heart would become a moot point, as it was against Foreman.
Not sure, I haven't seen the interview in over a year. If Holmes formed that appraisal from sparring that was less than "full out" (and if we assume he's being honest) it seems to me this would be an *a fortiori* reason to think Frazier hits harder, not a lesser reason. Of course, it rests on some wobbly assumptions. I have no challenge to the claim that Tyson had a stronger chin -but it might not be by as wide a margin as you think. Tough to say. I think "chin" is probably quite variable over an individual's career and context dependent in any case, as it is at least half neurological (as opposed to biomechanical) and the cortex has specialized regions that will be differently affected by the angle of the blow and the direction in which the head accelerates. (That's why someone can completely black out but recover himself almost completely in a short while, or remain fully conscious but completely unable to rise or defend himself for quite some time.) In fact the question of what makes a sturdy chin is one that I don't think has been discussed here. I'm really tired now (2 AM local time) but may open a thread on the subject tomorrow...
I think so also. I think Tyson was a little bigger when he was prime and he knocks out Frazier quickly.
