Mike Tyson was #1 p4p for a few years; who else would've been?

Which other heavyweights do you consider to have been #1 p4p before the had those rankings, i.e. before the 80's? Give arguments and who you'd consider the #2 during that year. I think this is a really special accomplishment of Tyson so i'm wondering who else could've accomplished it if those rankings were there earlier.

Ali, he had a lot of p4p credentials, like chin and speed for a man his size.
    In the 60s.

Ali was a contender around the mid sixties (with Jofre, Griffith, Hrada, Tiger, Saldivar and Ortiz as contenders maybe). Also, around 1974 'achievement' wise. But I don't know whether he should ever have been #1. Maybe late 66, early 67.

    Chavez followers would disagree.

Chavez was defintitely #2 but Spinks possibly was before the Tyson fight. Maybe either deserved the #1 spot?

Chavez and Tyson were rather split when it came to who was #1. It certainly wasn't as overwhelming for Tyson like it was for Jones jr during the late 90's.

Spinks was definetley in the mix around 1987, as Curry and Hagler were beaten 7 months apart. Those two were #1 and #2 respectively up until they were defeated.

Just trying to think who they had as #1 before Tyson. I can't imagine it was Chavez. Must have been Hagler or Curry. Probably Hagler.

I was going to say Joe Louis, but then realized he had such notables as Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Willie Pep and Ezzard Charles to compete with.

It would have been Hagler, with an even stronger case after Honeyghan stopped Curry. From late 1986 onwards until ran into the decision loss to Leonard, he was the top man.

Hagler and Curry, you could have made a case for either around 85/86.

Actually looked an old KO just before Hagler fought Leonard.

    1. Hagler
    2. Tyson
    3. Holyfield

A very late 89 KO had the following.

    1. Tyson
    2. Holyfield
    3. Chavez.

Yeah, I think Hagler was top when they started their rankings (early 85 i think) until he lost.

    For Heavyweights:

    Other than Tyson;

    Ezzard Charles
    Muhammad Ali
Joe Louis (though he had some tough comp)

    Can't think of anyone else....
